Any benifit aquired by monitoring fuel pressure?

Like the Vacuum gauge post I posted ealier, I was wondering if there is any reason to monitor fuel pressure?

Just to give you guys a heads up, I'm looking for ways to monitor my engine since it is to old for a scangauge.

Thanks,

Ryan

On the fuel pressure, I don't know if you have fuel injection or just a carburetor system. Either way, a fuel pressure gauge is not going to help you with fuel economy.

If your car is fuel injected, the oxygen sensor feedback allows the ECU to control the time the injector is on, to keep the air/fuel ratio right. If the pressure changes, the ECU just adjusts the time the sensor is on.

If your car is carbureted, then the float in the carb keeps the fuel level constant.

I currently have a Fuel injected 86 mr2. Thanks for the info, you reminded me of those Air/Fuel ratio gauges, any benifit from using them?

A well placed EGT might give you better information...running lean or rich and at what rpm...that and looking at spark plugs.

how old? is it mechanical fuel pump(pumps faster as the engine rpm's go up(run off the camshaft) or does ti have an electrical fuel pump? if its electrical that thigns pumping at a constant rate, theres a fuel pressure regulator that changes the flow so before that limiter your gonan see pretty constant values(might flux a bit)

Vacuum, tach, and engine temp gauges are handy. A voltmeter hooked to the O2 sensor can help you monitor what the engine is doing. Also mount a knock sensor on the engine and wire it into your stereo using a cassette tape adapter or fm modulator if you really want to drive yourself nuts with monitoring the engine.

All those are good to help keep the engine running perfectly even if you have a realtime MPG display like a supermid set up. When there is any problem in the engine using all of that you usually notice it as soon as it starts going wrong.

kozaz, since you have fuel injection, you can most likely get a SuperMID to work in your vehicle.

I am unsure if your VSS is compatible, but I do know that Yoshi has found some after market sensors to take the place.

Contact "Yoshi" on this board, as he makes and sells the SuperMID.

After reading the posts on the SuperMID it really got me excited. Thanks for all the info guys.

i have thought of raising my fuel pressure and running smaller spray injectors. the increased pressure with smaller injctors would result in roughly the same overall flow rate, but at higher pressure one would expect to get better atomization.

how high? some are already at 75psi....

clench, maybe cuz they're selling emotions not economical transportation, and they want those emotions comparing best to other cars. Nobody can really ttest drive mileage. I was helping a friend shop for a car and took my SG as a rough gauge of mileage - a Subaru dealer just about had a coronary when I went to attach it.
