Scan Guage II related question.
 

How dependable is that screen that tells you how many gallons is left?

This is the back ground for me to ask this question:

Scanguage says I'm at about 52 mpg total for the tank. That I had about 1.3 gallons left with a range of about 100 miles and 2 hrs left. And finally broke 500 miles on this last tank. The yaris fuel gauge was blinking on the last bar.

I'm trying to work on my MPG hypermiling skills and want to stretch out the tank. I gave in out of not wanting to run out of gas so I filled up and the tank took 10.551. Total tank size as stated by toyota is 11.1. Last four fills were around there as well.

The 1.3 seems just about right. The scang guage is a new toy for me. I guess I wish to know if anyone has experienced any inconsistencies?

Don't have experience with the scanguage, but you could test it easily.

Carry a gallon of gas in a gascan with you once you get down low on the next tank. Drive the car run until it runs out of gas, paying close attention to the scanguage and your gas guage.

I know both Subaru Legacys I owned read completely empty on the gas guage when I'd only used 12.5-13 gallons of the 15.9 gallon tank. However my old '78 Nova was completely out the moment the needle dipped below E. So the relationship between empty on a gas gauge and the amount of gas in the tank varies wildly.

hehe...yes, I was thinking of carrying extra gas as you've suggested...I guess I just may have to on this next round when the tank empties.

It's been very dependable for me :) I've run it down to something like .3 gallons remaining. And the fill was very very close to accurate ;)

If you calibrate your SG, and fill up in a consistent manner (same pump, same type of fill, etc.) the SG meter is pretty accurate :)

Thanks, it looks that way. I'll definitely know for sure when I have the extra gas in the trunk.
