Coolest wheels ever
Anyone wanna give me 29,000 dollars for a set of wheels, haha? These are by far the coolest wheels ever...
https://carscoop.blogspot.com/2008/02...oy-wheels.html Imagine if they made them in 13's for subcompacts? That'd be 8.5lbs. And they look super wide, so it would be less when you narrowed them. I know carbonfiber is super strong, but could four 5/6 pound wheels even support a car around 1500-2000 lbs? |
Huh. That's an interesting idea (note the pictures are CG), but you could just buy some 8-9 lb. 15" forged alloy racing wheels for something like $3-400 a piece instead. They're marketing those wheels to the filthy rich I think.

If you figure about 12.5 pounds for steel 13x4.5" steel wheels that are stock CRX HF rims, and that their claim is 1/3 the weight of a comparible wheel that comes out to 4 pounds, not 5-6 pounds for a carbon fiber rim, and if VX rims are 9 pounds for a 13" and Insight rims are nearly the same weight only 14", I don't see why more weight couldn't be shaved if you paid more attention to detail, I'm sure that at that price they carefully inspect each one for flaws, instead of turning out piles of castings, giving them little polish, some clear coat, and bolting them on.

I have to wonder what would happen if you hit a particularly bad pothole or clipped a curb. Carbon fiber doesn't flex or bend like metal does, it cracks. That gets to be an even bigger deal when they're holding 30+PSI.
An impact that might not affect a metal rim, or might result in a ding or slight bend may well shatter these rims. And that could get very dangerous very quickly. |
Aluminum doesn't bend easily either, it cracks as well, and sometimes alloy wheels fly apart, it happens.

how long before they start selling fake carbon fiber stickers to put on your standard rims.to bad about those lumpy spokes

.66x13= 8.5 And since those wheels look like they are 10" wide, cutting that to a reasonable width would reduce weight further.. lets say, 5/6lbs.. Made since to me. Probably 6/7 though actually, since it would be only the fiber being removed... |
I'm waiting for the ones with spokes made of individual carbon nanotubes.

Carbon Fiber tensile strength is about 3x that of a good carbon steel but those rims are rather heavy although big and wide in size. 9lb 15inch x 7.5" rims are available in alloy materials for a little over $100 each at Tire Rack.
