Tips for a Geo Storm
 

Hey guys,

After struggling to do everything I possible could to get better mileage out of my pickup truck, i have decided to purchase a 92 geo storm gsi with a automatic trans. and just park the truck in the drive way.

I was wondering what other members experiences with these cars are and if there are any tweaks specific to these vehicles to increase the mileage anymore. I was told by the previous owner that it gets 27 in the city and 35 on the highway. I wont pick the vehicle up until tomorrow afternoon though so I don't know how true this is.

Going from a truck that gets 10MPG to a car that gets 27+ is gonna be a treat within itself but being the greedy man that I am, i would still like to get the mileage higher if possible.

Thanks in advance for any tips or info you have on this vehicle. I know I wont get near the mileage of the metro but every little bit helps.

I always like to give everything a full tune up and fluid replacement, then take it from there.

Buy a better car. Sorry I can't be any more helpful, but I would not take a free one.

I just looked up the EPA numbers for the '92 Storm.
It came with both 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines - as expected, the 1.6 got better mpg. When equipped with auto trans the 1.6 had only a 3-spd but that combination still got slightly better mpg than the 1.8 liter with 4-spd auto.

Of course the standard trans gave the best mpg. I'm glad you now will be getting 2.5 to 3x the mpg you got with the pickup but you'd do even better with a stick shift. Next car I get is nearly guaranteed to be a stick shift.

Do what you can with what you have. My Oldsmobile sits in the yard because I don't have a need to drive it right now. Last time I drove it was to pick up two truck parts that wouldn't fit in my wife's car. Before that it was to take kids to soccer games when my wife was taking tests up at school in her car. Can't wait to get a Suburban, then both cars can sit at home while we're out with the whole gang. 1 truck getting 16-18mpg is better than two cars, one getting the same and one slightly higher.

But with the Geo Storm, I'm assuming since it's the GSi you have the 1.8 engine, assuming it's on stock tires and the 4-speed automatic and it's final drive are stock, your ideal cruising speed is 41-50mph

1668-2014 rpm is the ideal engine speed for a 3.54" stroke

Thanks for the links Occupant. We picked the car up today in McKinney, TX and drove it back to Louisiana. I filled up before we left Mckinney and once again when we arrived home to see what kind of average it got on the highway. I was astounded when my calculator came up with 38.8 MPG. This is with a broken ( literally in 2 pieces) PCV and average speed on the interstate at 70.

I am almost afraid to change the oil in the thing with it getting mileage above epa but the gauge didn't lie. We drove 238 miles on 6.228 gallons of gas.

That's great. Replace the PCV valve, change the oil (use the lightest viscosity recommended in the car's manual), experiment with air pressure, etc...enjoy.
