new guy from jax, fl

i ahve been lurking around this site for tha last few years reading on how to save gas, but up untill recently i didn't bother applying many techniques. now i am here to stay.

99% of the driving i do is stop and go city driving, so i dont expect my mileage to get anywhere as high a some peoples on here, but my personal goal is 35mpg. well i am gonna wrap this up by saying thank you to everyone who put this site together ans filled it with info.

Welcome. In my experience, it's far easier to improve city MPG than highway. You should be able to get good results by applying hypermiling techniques.

as of right now, im just taking it easy on the throttle and coasting when i can. until i get my scan gauge i dont want to get in the habit of trying something that turns out doesnt work. i can afford one tank of gas every two weeks, so i have a while to wait to wait to find out if something works or not.
when i had my '93 saturn sc2 1.9l dohc i could get 40mpg by 1st gear WOT to 2000rpm, 3rd gear WOT to 2500 rpm, 5th gear to 60 and coast back down to 45 WOT back to 60. i got 50 by using a few of the techniques that cheapybob used. HAI, 100ohm resistor in place of the air intake temp sensor and a manual fan switch.

now i am against using the resistors after my saturn started to take a crap. FE went down the drain, 16mpg in the city no matter what the driving style i used. it also had a bad problem of detonation, mix was too lean. even after i put the sensor back in, i still had the same problem. but hey, i paid 600 for the car, drove it 4 years and sold it for 1000.

theholycow, your hypermiling write up is very helpful. i will be working thru the list until i come up with what works best for me.
