Bye Bye Hatch :( equal new project :)

Well, I haven't been around here for a little while just been busy lately...well on May 20th my VX hatch had its life cut short, on my 25th B-day too, some girl turned in front of me going threw and intersection and i had no time and no where to go...here's the results

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...278c1c4027.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...3af94b84dd.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...ceea12e431.jpg

Well I had to move on, I've been searching for another VX hatch and 40+mpg but finding anything reasonable was far and few between, so I started seeing what else was out there since I bought my hatch back and figured I'd just swap my VX motor into something...well after searching for a few weeks, I came across something in my ideal price range and snagged in asap... so here she is a 94 Del Sol S...auto but not biggie since I have all the parts in my hatch for the 5 speed conversion

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...82b3abf272.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...6609dc2012.jpg

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...23f26bff75.jpg

Of course there is no chance that I could let this thing sit so I ripped out the interior since it was filthy and the drains for the rear window were clogged so i needed to get to those to clear them up,

bye bye carpet

this thing was filthy

So all the plastics got scrubbed down and cleaned the whole inside of the car is getting cleaned next, I removed all the extra wiring that seems to be in used hondas lol and once I receive the conversion mount the VX (D15z1) swap is going in...gonna try and clean and possibly wire tuck the engine bay while I'm waiting...

My Koni Yellows and GCs from my hatch along with my HX wheels will be going on the car soon too..future plans are to hit 50mpg

Well I impressed myself here lol first 2 days I had the car and it is almost completely gutted, the inside metal got clean some surface rust i wire brushed and painted over, the auto pedal set is gone, the auto gear selector is gone and I dropped the motor, here are the pictures...progress will be a little slow now I need to start ordering up some parts, engine bay cleaning and detailing along with the suspension is about the only things I can do, I'm gonna wait to put the interior back in untill the swap is done, just makes things a little easier...here are the pics...

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...eecc65c8c9.jpg

I started removing everything on the firewall and along the sides... gonna try and figure out some of the wiring for the VX and tuck as much of the harness as I can to clean things up and of course clean the crap out of this dirty engine bay...I'm also gonna swap the manual steering rack from the civic into the sol..figured its a little extra weight gone and a little less drag on the motor...plus I have it might as well lol...well here are some pics

The old D15 and auto are history

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...840aae960c.jpg

Did a little more, pulled the rear lower cross member with the steering rack out to make room for the manual rack from my VX and then tried to scrub some dirt out of the engine bay...looks like I'm gonna need to put a little more elbow grease into it lol...also started to look at how I am gonna tuck the harness...a couple pics...

This is where the Sol stands now, this weekend I am hoping to get some time to rip the civic apart and the motor suspension and steering rack plus 5 speed swap items out, mostly all my new parts have arrived so I just need to get down and dirty with the rebuild now, thanks for looking guys...Matt

GasSavers_bigrod 07-02-2008 01:14 PM

Wow you work fast!! But it looks like the VX is still reparable, just judging from the pics, I could be wrong. Was the frame damaged? Looks like it needs new front sheetmetal, bumper, radiator support and pull the sides a bit. VX's are just hard to find and hate to see a good car go to scrap.

Goodluck on the new project, looks like you're off to a good start.

yea i got a new toy and a big check from the insurance company so I got busy with it right away, waiting for all the parts to come in sucks lol...

Unfortunately the civic is pretty heavily damaged I was doing 40ish when the girl turned in front of me, the motor is pushed back an inch or 2 the driver side frame rail is bent over just about to the exhaust manifold and the pass side has a nice bend outward too...I'll be selling the shell if anyone is interested for interior or other parts off it but I doubt it would be worth the repair to make it road worth again...maybe someone could give it a tube frame front and make a drag car?

The AC torque mount snapped in half, trans side rubber ripped out, my O2 snapped off the manifold :( (that one sucks but I have a spare) hoping the drivers mount is ok cause I have brand new mounts for all the others, might just grab an insert if needed...

I've ordered all new control arms front and back, new trailing arm bushings, new tie rods and ball joints, have a complete gasket kit and new exedy clutch , all new coolant lines and rad hoses coming from honda, new fuel filter, Sol already has a new rad in it, new water pump and timing belt...the list goes on, can't wait, the car should pretty much be brand new when I'm done other then some body work but I'm not concerned at this time with it, rather have an awesome MPG car then a spotless shell ;)

Wow, this is your introduction post?! Nice work. I love how small the Del Sol is and always wanted to see what could be done since it has less surface area than the VX. I think the back window kills it aerodynamically but I wonder if something like vortex generators could unlock the potential of the small chassis.

smccall 07-04-2008 02:09 PM

Sorry to hear about the VX. Happy to hear to about the Del Sol. I always wanted to get one and still might if I see a super deal on one. Will you be parting out anything on the VX. I needed the rubber striping thats around the rear windows.

R.I.D.E. 07-04-2008 05:29 PM

Here is some irony for you. I bought a red 94 VX hit in the rear and totalled with 27,492 actual miles on it, and sold my 94 Del Sol, which was black.
7000 miles on the rebuilt VX and 59 MPg average.

Sold the Del Sol with 150 k miles for $3500.

My VX still has the original tires with about 15 k miles left on them. The only parts that have been replaced are the air filter and wiper blades.

Sweet swap! Sucks that it was a loss, however you made lemonaid when you were handed lemons. Hondas are so easy to work on. I wouldn't let go of that D15Z1 either. I'm working on my Passat now. It's a pain compared to a Honda.

I bought my VX off of a member on here and had just been reading stuff not really posted but i figured a lot of people on here might like to see my new project since its planned to be a nice clean DD with a decent MPG goal...I am interested in seeing what I can do aerodynamically to see some gains, grill block is first step and maybe a belly pan but after that I have some researching to do...

Once, I am done picking away at the VX I am gonna see if anyone locally is interested in the whole thing since it has a decent interior but if not i'm going to be parting it out, I'll get back to you if I go that route...

Lol wow that is very ironic, congrats on the great find! I was at the beach this weekend and saw a pretty clean completely stock VX...made me miss mine :(

I acctually have the motor in my VX plus a spare motor and trans, the spare is the one thats getting all the new parts and going into the Del sol, supposedly has less miles on it then my VX did so some freshening up and into the Del Sol...Hondas are way to easy to work on :) VW are the devil...lol I am not a fan, a 17 year old girl and her 2006 jetta ended my VX's life short...

Thanks for all the compliments guys, just picked up a new dash and manual cluster, old dash had some marks on it and now I won't have to stare at P,1,2,D,R lol all so all of my parts seem to be here other then the tool i bought to do the rear trailing arm bushings but I have a lot to do till I get to them anyways! should have some updates for you soon...Matt

Loserkidwac 07-05-2008 05:12 PM

Well Been waiting for parts and it seems like mostly everything is here now

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...3d87d536c9.jpg

On my way home from the Beach today I stopped and picked up a new dash since mine had some marks and crap on it...what I didn't realize was it must be from a 93 since it dosen't have the pass airbag... I'd like to keep it but the underside looks to different for me to try and mount it, I guess I'll just take the weight savings for now till I can figure something out...maybe swap the dash skins?

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...271d604087.jpg

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...5fb5433c24.jpg

The dash also included a cluster from a 5 speed so now I don't have the auto crap in the center too

Since I had the dash out I figured I'd remove the blower and the AC unit...looks like I'm gonna pull the dash out of the VX and swap the non-AC box into the Del sol, give me a chance to clean the filters and stuff there were some leaves and crap in the Del sol box

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...a0032e1ffb.jpg

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...76ca119451.jpg

Thats all for now, tomorrow I have some time so I either will start ripping into the VX or countinue to clean the sol and wire tuck it...Matt

Loserkidwac 07-08-2008 06:32 AM

I suggest every Civic/Del Sol owner clean out there blower...if you don't have AC its really simple, remove the glove box and the bracket behind it then there is 2 screws holding the passage between the blower and the heater core, then there are 4 or 5 holding the blower in, I needed a swivel to get one but i'm sure you could get it without but not as easy, once you get those out it drops out pretty easy and you don't need to remove the dash...I took it apart and hosed it out and cleaned it really good...there was about 2 hand fulls of leaves in it and even after spraying it with the hose the paper towels I used to dry it were black...can't believe I was breathing that crap in...yuck!!

Loserkidwac 07-12-2008 09:53 PM

Big Update!! Had a friend over and the extra set of hands was very useful!

We pulled the z1 out of the the wrecked hatch along with the manual steering rack and some of the suspension components I will be use on the Del Sol

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...81440b985c.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...92e7c0e67c.jpg

This stuff is gonna get cleaned up and then installed into the Del Sol hopefully by next weekend...

Well after my friend left I go down and dirty with the engine bay...it needed attention and I was avoiding it :p soap and water didn't cut it so I went at it with some "bug and tar" remover stuff which also has some wax in it and it worked perfect!

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...f829ca6117.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...0716f90385.jpg

Then i kept my motivated self going and did the wire tuck on the drivers side...well worth the effort...for the pass side I can't do it the same way with out some serious rerouting I am just going to hit it behind somethings, I have an idea that should work!

Loserkidwac 07-14-2008 08:25 PM

Well yesterday was the first day I started to reinstall parts!!! A turning point in what I am now calling "Project Sol Cleansing"...

I've been cleaning every nut and bolt as i got, wire wheel some paint and then anti-seize...

Yesterday I installed the clutch hydro lines and master cylinder

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...6e1f97d8b5.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...7f65979232.jpg

Tonight I replaced the inner and outer tie rods, and mounted the manual steering rack and sub-frame into the chassis...it was a pain getting all the bolts back in, lots of wiggling, loosening, tightening, shift, etc...but i finally got it all bolt back and bolt the new LCAs on too...oh plus the new rear mount from Honda!

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...e5ffc9b50b.jpg
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...b2e43ffd40.jpg

I've got plenty more to do but seeing stuff back in the car keeps me motivated...either tomorrow or wed I'm looking to put another few hours into it...Matt

Loserkidwac 07-16-2008 08:15 PM

Put some more time in on the Sol tonight, just trying to get stuff back on the firewall so I can get the motor in, finally took the fly wheel off and getting that to the machine shop and gonna put the gaskets, timing belt, water pump etc on the motor so its ready to go when the fly wheel gets back...

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...1caaf682cb.jpg

Look what we have here a clutch pedal!! First time this car has had one, I also got my Del Sol shift linkage today...lucky i fount out the civic linkage is about 2" to short to use in the Sol...

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...5ad65494d3.jpg

Also got my new corner lights in the mail today...

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...99badbb883.jpg

and I mounted up the front UCAs...the new suspension is pretty

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...5426c9a035.jpg

thats all for now, plenty more to come!

GasSavers_blkjak 07-17-2008 05:25 AM

sorry about you hatch -

i am new - i have a 89 crx dx - good luck with your new ride - blkjak - :D

Loserkidwac 07-17-2008 07:02 AM

Thanks! I'm so happy its coming out really nice, very time consuming but it should be back on the road soon enough and hoping to get mid 40mpg's out of the box and gonna aim t get in the 50's consistently on my daily commute with the aero mods I have planned!

Loserkidwac 07-17-2008 07:24 PM

Didn't snap any pics from tonight but got the z1 on the engine stand, broke the crank pulley lose so tomorrow the gaskets and timing belt should be all on, got the stubborn axles nut off and removed the ball joints from the spindles, now the spindles and calipers will get cleaned and painted to match the rest of the new parts! ...still a lot to do but its moving along at a good pace!

Loserkidwac 07-18-2008 07:31 PM

Here are some pics from yesterday

z1 on the stand
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...52f4d4c165.jpg
stubborn Axles nut...mutilated!!! got some frustration out with that! ordered new axles which i'll be getting tomorrow....
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...fd17ccd427.jpg
and then the spindles both free of the axles and lower ball joints removed...
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...6a047d1539.jpg

then tonight i did a little tear down on the z1 started cleaning and painting a few things just to clean it up a little...
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...361d45ffe4.jpg

Might get some progress in tomorrow but most likely I'll have some more updates next week...and hopefully the motor will be in by then end of the week!

Loserkidwac 07-21-2008 08:11 PM

Well my Ex/Si/Vx front lip showed up along with the stock VX grill block I ordered...it was only $8 to get the stock one and I wanted to see if it would work on the Del Sol bumper...
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...75e2a345ca.jpg

and I think it looks pretty good!
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...9168bbb025.jpg
I'll be mounting after I get a few tanks in for a baseline MPG..hoping to see some small gains with the lip and grill block...

Then tonight I picked up my new half shafts and I clean and painted the spindles then put the new lower ball joints in, also spent some time on the motor too, I'll have the flywheel back tomorrow and hopefull the motor will be in the car too!

Loserkidwac 07-24-2008 08:53 PM

Well after a lot of time staring at the Honda Manual and searching around the internet I decided I was ready to do the wiring for the D15z1...I am using the VX engine harness, which for the most part plugs right into the Del Sol harness...the civic VX does however have an addition engine harness plug located on the pass side shock tower...it includes the wires for the 5-wire O2 and the EGR lift valve...since I had the totaled VX I decided to un-loom the harness trace these wires to the ECU and then un-pin them...

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...fc84d9b2b2.jpg

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...8bff47e152.jpg

I'm glad I did because it made for a very clean install and I think simplified it!

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...f23c6cd5a3.jpg

Now on the other side of the engine bay there is a plug for the EGR control Box...this however isn't in the Del Sol, since I swapped from power to manual steering rack I had an extra plug from the power steering fluid sensor which was in the ideal location...so I cut the plug off the VX harness then soldered it to the wires for the PS sensor all i needed to do was pop the pin out at the ECU for the PS sensor and put it where the the EGR control box should be!

https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...41275ef6b5.jpg

The only other thing was to wire up vtec...which I lucked out because it was pre-wired in the Del Sol! I didn't know, decided to check at the ECU and yuppers both wires were there!

Final product!

Lots of progress made!!!!

Worked late into the night Fri and the got the motor wired up, the shift linkage in, the exhaust manifold bolted on, etc, everything connected so I could start the beast up! Today i went to the junkyard got the one line I needed for the clutch and a stock air box and a slave cylinder...

Lookie a shifter!

Loserkidwac 07-28-2008 06:34 AM

Well I finished up most of the wiring, bleed the brakes, topped off the trans and other fluids and took her for a test drive :)

Cruised around the neighbor hood with the top off, interior stripp including the rear window still out, a nice rack since I didn't change out the rear suspension yea and without the hood on or the exhaust hooked up :-P and I am impressed, she runs strong moves the heavier Del Sol chassis around pretty well I didn't notice any real difference from the VX...Hoping to finish up and install the rest of the parts this week or weekend! I have some pictures I'll post up later!

Your direct approach is admirable. In terms of emotional satisfaction, it is certainly superior to my approach:

1. Get really enthusiastic. Pull everything apart. Label everything. Clean everything. Get confused. Say, "I'll take a look at it tomorrow."
2. Wait six months. Become convinced that I am a total idiot and I've screwed everything up beyond repair.
3. Be in a good mood one morning for no explicable reason. Put everything back together in 15 minutes. Say, "What was I thinking?"
4. Enjoy.

I wonder if you could build some sort of Perspex dome (or Lexan, or something similar) to smooth out that notchback? Or perhaps some kind of top side diffuser.

LOL I really don't know how I've kept motivated for this long on this project!! ha ha...I had a slight slump in the midst of it once you'd spent all the time for tear down and look at how much is left to go...and really all you've accomplished it...well not very rewarding looking...you start to wander away...but once you start "rebuilding" the fruits of your labor, time emotionally, financially start to become apparent and well worth it!! The first test drive was amazing!

I was considering the idea of some sort of rear "hatch" to help with the aero dynamics but I don't think I could create something ascetically pleasing...if you look up at some of the pictures I have decided I am going to mount some VGs on the roll bar and and then retrofit the rear hatch spoiler from my totaled VX off the back of the roll bar to hopefully help create a "wale tail" ...I believe it will look very stock and clean...I love getting awesome MPG but to the point where I don't want to make the car look rigged together, if I were better with fiberglass and body work I'm sure i could make something that looked great but thats beyond my skill level...I once photoshoped the civic hatch back end onto a Del Sol and damn do I wish Honda had done taht from the factory!...Hmm I do have a good hatch back end...:::pondering:: lol

Thanks for the comments!! Its been very motivational!!

tucsonron 07-28-2008 08:09 AM

The Del Sol always looked like a mid engine Italian car with the world's smallest engine tucked in there. And then on the other hand, if it had a "bubble" of sorts where the notchback is, it would look for all the world like a mini Porsche 928. The shape of the B-pillars is great. Are you trying to sort of force the rear winglet of your wrecked VX into the topline of the notch? That's what it looks like you're trying to do in this pic:

<img src="https://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c208/dxlboss/IMG_1928.jpg" width=300>

Loserkidwac 07-28-2008 08:46 AM

Since the rear of the hatch is shaped differently the center of the spoiler contours away from the Del Sol which is straight...the side slope down and and curved which fits long the back of the B pillar on the sol fairly well which I was hoping to accomplishes a slight downward angle off the back of the roof simialr to how it was on the VX...Once I get a decent placement I am going o fil in the gap in the center, I think at most it was a 1/2inch, with either a peice of plastic cut to fith the gap and seal the seam to the spoiler and use some rubber weatehr stripping on the side towards the roof...just so it is removable, or I might try my skill at fiber glass and fill it in with that...

When you say force do you just mean to make it follow the body lines? Yes I am trying to get it close to as possible, it fit decently just mocking it up...once I get a mount made I may try using a head gun to mold it a tad bit better since it is just plastic...I'm not very knowledgeable on aerodynamics so I am welcome any or all information or discussion on the topic! From what I had been reading I think the spoiler and VGs might help me a lot and for what its going to cost me its at least worth some trial and error

One thing I really admire about your project... or more particularly, one thing that your project really demonstrates is the importance of doing repairs yourself. I know there are dedicated mechanics out there, and there are dedicated installers who do excellent diagnostics and excellent precise work. But as a rule, those shops are expensive. When I am working on a car and swearing and strutting around exclaiming, "What were they thinking? Why on Earth did they make it this way?" My girlfriend will say, "We should just take it to a mechanic." I always stick it out, because the more you work on any individual car, the easier it gets to work on. And I will point to some bolt way up underneath the dash that is near impossible to get to, and it doesn't really do all that much, just keeps things from shaking, and say, "You think there's a nineteen year old stoner getting paid $8.50 and hour in all of Tucson who's gonna lie upside down with a flashlight in his mouth for the ten minutes it takes to cinch that bolt back on 1/12 of ratchet turn at a time?"

And even the pros, being pros, avoid unnecessary tasks whenever possible. This, in general, means cleaning. They'll do your brakes; they'll do them perfect; they'll get it done in 20 minutes... But it won't be clean. And even the best have off days. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled drums off only to find about half the springs and other gadgets missing. But even assuming they do a perfect job, if you don't wirebrush and clean, when you look under the hood, there are oils spots and drips everywhere. If it's dirty there is no way to tell what's leaking and what is just general road grime. Everything is sort of camouflaged in a brown/black/grey category of "engine stuff". There's no distinction.

I am getting a lot of this sort of thing on the car I just bought. It has good repair records, so when I follow the repairs with a flashlight I am seeing tons... tons of little half-done repairs. There was AC work, and they put everything back together, but there are a few bolts and screws missing. I am at a loss what to do, because I have no idea where to get the little bolts and clips that get tossed aside and forgotten by mechanics who aren't working on their own cars.

Oh I love finding things like you describe on cars I've purchased...with this project I decided I wasn't going to chance it, I had the insurance check and figured it was a worth while investment to use it all towards this car and even at this point I am certain it was the best idea! I will say I was very lucky with this car...the only weird things were a alarm system under the dash...which I removed and cleaned up all the wires that were spliced into, there was a mystery swith on the steering column which had 2 speaker wires attached to it running threw the fire wall and just dangling in the engine bay??? and then the previous owner ran speaker wires to the rear speakers but didn't connect them at the head unit...I assume the "S" model didn't come with the rear speakers stock but with a little investigation Honda has the wires for them already there...so alll he had to was look a little closer :-P mechanically the car is in great shape I replace a lot of things that were fine but with 250K on the chassis I didn't want to even both with worn bushings and stuff...I mean the new suspension components should be goot for 100K I'd imagine actually I can't see why this car couldn't run another 100-200K miles without any serious work needed

Personally for me I've done the new car and payments and its just not for me I'd rather do this kind of project, cheap car, fairly cheap parts and repairs, drive it daily and enjoy it...I put a decent amount of money into this car but I still think its less then I make in car payments a year...Its nice being handy...but I have def had those times where I've been frustrated with a car and couldn't figure out why something wouldn't work right...ugh my VX had a parking brake issues...I replace pretty much everything for it yet it still wouldn't hold..once the pads wore a little it wouldn't hold at all, you had to go in and move the adjusters by hand they would never work with the back up and tap the brake method...

Oh and I hope my project inspires some people out there... a lot of things I did for the first time, I never did an auto to manual conversion, never did a VX swap (wiring is a little more complicated then a normal swap), never did the steering rack swap or replaced inner and out end links, I'm gonna be doing the rear trailing arm bushings myself thats new for me...I'm hands on I learn by doing, the Honda service manual is great and I believe anyone with the motivation to learn this stuff can do it!! Thanks for the comments! Matt

wow very nice project for fuel economy. ive always thought that the del sol would be the best candidate for aero mods since you can essentially make it more aerodynamic than a delsol. its better than any other civic of that generation because it has a much smaller frontal area. all you have to do is fix the garbage .cd with a tapering structure over the trunk.

Loserkidwac 07-29-2008 10:22 AM

Thanks! I'm hoping my idea with the rear hatch spoiler and VGs will help!

Well I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!

All of the wiring is complete and done properly, no hack job here!! Got an up shift light too!!

Just finished putting the rear suspension on, including some camber adjustable UCAs, New Trailing arm bushing (extremely needed!), Light weight Alum LCAs, Koni Yellows, and Eibach Springs...

I patched up the whole where the auto cables originally came threw, welded and the some JB Weld to seal it up nice!
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...907201ca53.jpg

I also took the exhaust of the VX and chopped it to fit the Del Sol...it was very simple just cut out about a 6" section and welded it back together! The Del Sol exhaust came off in 3 sections that rusted apart :-P

Gonna work on making the VX rear diffuser fit the del sol...its close but needs some massaging...might opt for a custom peice too rather then hacking up a good OEM piece worth $40 new :-P

Ah I also took some more recent pictures of my VX

Yea 250K on them they needed to be replaced! I've used the same set of Konis on 3 different Hondas now, def worth every penny...I couldn't imagine spending the money any other way...

Impressive. Such a big project and yet you don't seem to get hopelessly overwhelmed. Just keep moving along.

I love the fact that you don't cut corners and rig things together. Every time I see something rigged together on a Honda it just makes me sick. Such a quality built car put to shame.

I wish I knew how to weld...

I've done "hack jobs" in the past with my CRX, not necessarily rigged the wrong way but def not the best or best looking...with this project I did have the extra money to do things right from the insurance check...but I decided that I wanted this to be a good daily driver and if I invested in it now and did it all at once then it should be good for plenty of years to come! I'm very happy and the hard work has paid off, the end results is motivation enough to keep me going!! This is a blast to drive! I have my fingers crossed the MPG numbers are up to par...but honestly going from 25-27mpg on premium gas in my mazdaspeed to whatever this give is going to be great...Thanks for all the comments and motivation guys that helps me keep going with this and getting it done!

Oh and welding is awesome, one of my favorite hobbies! I have a Hobart Handler 180, great machine, my dad and I split the cost even though I've been mainly using it :-P I'm always looking for stuff to weld if anyone in the area needs help...
