Reporting capabilities via SMS?

For those of us who don't have an iPhone w/ data plan (or an iPhone for that matter), has fuelly.com considered updating fuel-up data to the extent to which sites like twitter.com uses SMS to keep track of its subscribed users? For instance, registering a mobile phone number w/ a user's profile would allow users to text messages to fuelly.com w/ odometer reading, price, gallons pumped. The fuelly.com site could parse the SMS message and post according to the registered phone-SMS number registered for the corresponding user account. Just a thought....

Yep, it's on our list of things we're working on. The simplest thing so far seems to be a twitter bridge where you send a direct message to @fuelly (we reserved it for this purpose) and we'd add a fuel-up.

We also started to investigate having our own SMS system and our own shortcode but that would be thousands of dollars a month and be US-only, while twitter is starting to work in other countries.

So yeah, in the next few weeks, expect to see a twitter implementation.

I would also love to see a twitter or SMS option. I'd like to suggest that you use direct messages on twitter as opposed to @ replies. This keeps fuel reports out of the public twitter feed.

I've tried MyMileMarker and FuelFrog and both have Twitter functionality. All in all I much prefer Fuelly's feature set and format to them but it would be great to be able to post my fuel reports from my car when I fill up.

Keep up the great work.

I don't use twitter, but, if this came into play, ... wait.. no data plan.. So I'm still stuck. :P

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Matt. The site is awesome, and I like that motorcycles have been added. I didn't really consider the ongoing maintenance costs associated with hosting your own SMS operations. It is a good call to use twitter with the reserved word @fuelly. Hopefully this will come to fruition with fuelly.com. I'll use Mike H.'s suggestion and post to twitter as a interim solution.

Once again, a terrific site!
