Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

Interesting necrothread. Good point about everything being constant mesh, but I have the feeling (with no research to back it up) that unloaded gears in constant mesh represent much less waste than a...

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

I see, you mean to skip the counter shaft and go directly to the differential's gear. I suppose that's possible. For that matter, how are those dual final gears packaged? Would it be possible to...

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

Can you elaborate?

Direct drive and its efficiency come from locking the input and output shaft together with a clutch rather than with gears. One is hollow at the end and the other rides inside...

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

He posted again and pointed out that direct drive is only used in traditional RWD FR layouts. In FWD and MR/RR layouts it's not possible to have direct drive....

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

Good point. I think that's out of my budget too, but it is at least (probably) within my ability.

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

I thought of the same experiment. I'd miss using 5th gear but it should work.

Doing it by tire size wouldn't work; I'd need really huge tires which wouldn't fit under the car as well as changing...

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

I came up with some guesses:
1. Marketing.
2. Packaging or engineering issues for really short gears in the transmission or really tall gears in the rear end.

I asked a retired Chrysler manual...

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

Actually, I thought of a reason that would be meaningful for some cars but is not universally practiced. If the direct drive gear is used on the way to 60mph then its better efficiency contributes to...

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

I wouldn't think 0-60 would be an issue; you can have the same effective ratios, just with the highest gear being direct drive, by having a shorter final drive ratio.

Re: list of gas saving tips from best to worst

People have done manual steering conversions. Another option may be the electric power steering found on many modern vehicles; it's not merely an electric motor driving a common power steering pump,...

Tank is the correct word for fuel storage in the car. Butt has two T's when you're talking about the part of your body. One T is for the word that separates things that disagree.

For steady...

Here, we like to go deeper into those ideas. I can offer some additional insight into some of them.

That is a valid strategy. However, the...

That's a great one, and I do it as much as possible. It's called DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut Off). One gotcha on it: Not every fuel injected car behaves the same. Some work as Gary described, others...

The O2 sensor reads exhaust gases. Intake air is sensed by the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. More air won't flow unless you step on it more. I suspect that your loss was from not being able to resist...

I'll assume that's humor. It's not about top speed, it's about acceleration. We should definitely get more deisel cars, though.

Bad timing. Back in the 80s and when gas prices were very low in the early 90s, we had loads of small slow cars, and loads of people drove them and got tired of them. They collectively bought SUVs...
