If it weren't for the Jetta TDI, I would have had a fairly low number here, but I paid over $12,000 for the TDI, not counting the fact that I was about $2k upside-down on the previous car.
Incidentally, I loved the TDI, but it wouldn't fit 3 car seats, and we couldn't afford 2 vehicles at the time (and if we could, we didn't want the one with the kids in it to be the junker).
EDIT: Also, the TDI needed more repairs (almost all electrical stuff) than any other vehicle I have ever owned.

Back in '74, I bought a '66 Chevy Malibu from a cop in the San Gabriel Valley. Under the seat was a little baggie with this sorta greenish plant material in it...

it's interesting but not surprising that more than 50% of the poll shows cars in the $1-4k range. what IS surprising is that cars $250 and under more than triple the $8-12k range, the range i thought would be much higher. this would be much of the new and new used economy cars sales, perhaps in the general public, outside of this group(forum).

I think that a large number of people tend to perceive the $1-4k range as being a reasonable price for a dependable, several year old used car, that they can drive without putting much, if any work into. The people who are paying $8-12k for a used car probably aren't on here, and those who paid $12k+ are those who've purchased new cars.

My free car has been treating me well for almost 10 years now. Love it!
I've put struts, brakes, tires, battery, windshield, etc. into it but still I consider it an unbeatable value.
Alas, it's rusting away so at some point I'll have to retire it. :sad:
