I understand that they do fail, but it seems like people need to gap their plugs and put a new distributor cap/rotor in, so they buy wires too.
well at night i can see them arc out between the boot and wire (not the plug end, where the wire comes outa the boot to go to the coil packs) and jump to the block when engine is reved cant get much more obvious than that haha

or the ol mist with water test at night usually brings out the misfiring culpret.

plugs i got are delco oems and check them when i change the wires and always right at .060.

time to change em out again, starts misfiring bad on anything above idle on dewy mornings.... gonna get taylor wires, same price as bosh but 50x better quality and fitment, least they were for my 4.3 blazer. time to treat the 4 banger rust bucket truck haha

Don't buy them from Rockauto, they'll just send Xact. That's how I ended up with Xact wires for my truck, but at least I only paid $10 to not get the Taylor wires I ordered...at that price I won't feel bad if they fail in a year.

Re: Spark plug wire removal without damage?

You'd be surprised at all the parts you can get at Auto Zone with a lifetime warranty. My 517K mile Escort has lifetime spark plug wires, ignition module, front and rear struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, water pump, fuel pump, front brake pads, rear brake shoes, clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. There may be other parts that I can't think of right now. Doesn't cost much to keep it on the road when most of the parts are free and I do my own work!! They also have lifetime starters and alternators, but I don't have them. I'm still on the original alternator which has had new brushes put in it once since new and when the original starter wore out the car had about 250~300K miles so I opted for the cheaper one with 1 year warranty thinking the car wouldn't last this long, but I have another one off of a junker that appears to be practically new I picked up at Pull-A-Part a couple years ago for under $20.

I do all my cars this way. Buy the part one time and forget about it for as long as I own the car and as you all know that's a long time.

Ugh, if only the right spark plug wire for the VX could be had at AutoZone I'd jump on that boat right away!

Re: Spark plug wire removal without damage?

Almost everything on my Buick was lifetime warranty from Trak Auto, but of course when Trak went under, so did the warranty. Over the years though I did get a few starters, and I think one fuel pump and one radiator free. The brakes, shocks, & alignment are lifetime from Sears, so I still have that.

Advance Auto has 3 lifetime warranty brands in the standard replacement category (I didn't check the performance category)...

$38 Xact http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Spark-Plug-Wire-Set-Xact_3302725-P_197_R|GRPTUNEAMS_468615741____

$58 Autolite http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Professional-Series-Ignition-Wireset-Autolite_15250036-P_197_R|GRPTUNEAMS_490811885____

$70 NGK http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Ignition-Wire-Set-NGK_15500245-P_197_R|GRPTUNEAMS_336423143____

Hey wait a minute, Xact wires from Advance Auto have a lifetime warranty, I wonder if I gave them my phone number when I bought the last set for the Buick, maybe I can get a set for free even though I won't need it having bought BWD Select wires recently...

Re: Spark plug wire removal without damage?

That reminds me, is BWD still putting nipples on the wires for the older GM distributors?

Re: Spark plug wire removal without damage?

No, my BWD Select wires don't seem to have any special nipples. I don't know what the nipples look like so I can't say for sure. I'll try to remember to get a photo for you.

Re: Spark plug wire removal without damage?

Ok, it will be on the distributor end of the wire, just a rubber nipple extending from the top of the boot that will lock into the distributor ring.
