When I was in the US in 86 one of my colleagues took me to a concert using his wife's car. I have no idea what it was but it was one of these old "boats" and it was so cramped inside. I had more room inside my Ford Escort hire car.

Yeah, a lot of those behemoths had gigantic engine bays and rear trunks, but the passenger spaces inside could be disappointing in comparison with all the real estate they took up.

Efficiency of design weren't their strong suits, unless you liked large, broad-shoulderd engines and had lots of luggage to haul.

I remember photos sometimes of a mechanic standing in the engine bay working on the car. I remember quite a lot of open space and seeing the ground easily 50 some years ago, maybe not to stand in the bay but at least close to it on some of my folks' cars.

Friend's 1975 Newport had enough space between the grill and radiator for a medium sized cooler.
