I think that raising awareness is the key. people look at my car different when I tell them my mileage especially if they have ever owned a cavalier.

a girl in my teen club has an '03 and she was proud of the fact that she got 300 miles on one of her tanks. I told her that I was at half a tank and just turned over 400 miles. (side note: my gas gauge isn't linear so that is more like the 1/4th tank line). I got over 530 miles on that tank with the same engine and tank size. not to shabby.

personally, I would want something that looks a little better than the car chalk or the white board. I am heading to lowes today or thursday. I hope to find some numbers that statically stick to glass. If I do, I will probably post some pics.

If people really want something that looks good and gets some attention, an LED or LCD display would look great... You would just have to figure out what can be mounted where legally, and how to keep it from getting stolen. I suspect that an LED display would be cheaper and less likely to be stolen, but is also less likely to be legal...

there was a guy (not sure on this site or another) that had a camera mounted to his dash. oh by the way, he had a prius. he mounted a screen to his trunk and had it displaying his mileage. camera was pointed at the on board computer and displayed on the back.

that was pretty cool but it probably took money and lots of it. I am not saving gas to save the planet but more to pad my back pocket. well more give me more money for my family. that is a better way to say it.

the white board idea, though I didn't like it at first seems to be the most readily accessible and cheapest. I couldn't find the static cling lettering so I went with the white board. here is a link to the pic.

I also added the EPA rating for my car for comparison if anyone cared. hopefully this will cause several conversations from passers by which is kind of my goal. get more people interested in doing this and maybe change the mentality a little.

and these are the same people who are going to vote this november and help decide what direction the US will go in.

there's a thread here somewhere that links to MPG stickers. they're pretty cheap, so i'll try to do a search later.
