A dubious but juicy rumour concerning XFi's & VX's

Your unfounded conspiracy theory o' the day, courtesy of the EV list...

Quote:
In the 1990s, GM and Honda allegedly made a handshake deal. GM was losingmoney on the Geo Metro range and was interested in cutting costs. The rumour is that supposedly GM agreed to drop the Metro XFi (53/58 mpg) if Honda would stop selling the Civic VX model (47/56 mpg). The Metro XFi was discontinued in 1995, and the Civic VX vanished in 1996. True story? I have no idea. I don't even recall where I heard or read it. As I say, take it for what it's worth.

HAHA!

That makes so much sense. I can see it now.

Honda CEO: "We're losing money on the VX. The only condition where we'll stop losing money is if our competition agrees to stop losing money too."

Wouldn't it be smarter for either of the companies to stop making their money pit and let the competition continue to lose money?

BUT... then the other company would be losing money AND have the bragging rights to a much more efficient car in their line up...

A better question might have been: since Honda's so experienced at doing deals to stop selling money-losing, but efficient models, maybe they should have cut a deal with Toyota years back when they were both still losing money on the Insight and Prius.... ?

It's silly, I agree. Blame it on Friday nutty-ness.
