There used to be vertical air curtain freezers as well. I must have stocked tons of frozen goods in them back in high school.

There are a few stores around here with the open chest freezers as well. Every time I see them I'm thinking about the waist.

our food co-op just bought a new fridge with an open front simaler to what stores sell cheese and fruits out of, they looked closely to what fridges of this size used, and what drives up the energy use was opening the fridge, because every time you open it it causes an air current inside the cooled compartment, the open style fridges let cool air settle, they also cool the mass, not the air, and that cool mass is the shelving so it keeps the products cool insted of cooling the air in order to cool the products, as I said on another thred, according to refrigaration engeners I've spoken to, if you want to increase the efficentcy of a fridge reduce the amount of empty air space.

When I was in Belgium, the "Kolyrut" (sp?) grocery store (reminded me of a Smart and Final) had *closed* chest freezers with lists of what was inside the chests. You had to lift the door to get the item.
