Digital Speedometer

I'm thinking of changing my display to be all digital. This way I can recalibrate it when I change tire size, etc. I'm also hoping to eventually switch to the instrument cluster for the Honda s2000.

I'd like it if any electronics guys can take a look at this article and tell me what they think. I'm thinking of just hacking into the three digit display on the s2000 cluster and using it instead of switching VSS sensors and other things to try to make it work properly.

I think the s2000 cluster

I think the s2000 cluster had been done with modifications to the stock vss. , I dunno about the electrical crap though.

For it to work properly you have to use the VSS from a 92+, or at least part of the VSS from a 92+ to get the proper electric signal. Then you have to create a conversion box to convert the signal from 92+ VSS to s2000 VSS. it's all kind of tricky and the guy who figured it out has yet to do a "how to"

for around 20 bucks you can

for around 20 bucks you can buy a magnet/sensor style digital speedo for bicycles which can be calibrated. might be adaptable to a car too. just a thought.

Yeah, there was a guy on HT

Yeah, there was a guy on HT that did a whole new dash...can't remember the gauge company he used but they were very nice, kind pricy though. His speedometer had a magnetic pickup that he mounted on the half-shaft on the back of his engine. It allowed for correction for any tire size.

I've seen digital

I've seen digital speedometers that calculate mpg while you drive, and changes as your driving style and conditions change. My friend had one in his Monte carlo (year unknown), it was a real kick to watch as we went from highway to in-town driving. The display also calculated the distance he would be able to travel on his current gas levels and mpg. For someone who likes to always know his mpg, this could be something you might be interested in.

I've looked into this, and the only cars that offer this type of functionality are cars/computers made after 1996. This is referred to as obd2. My current car is obd0. The engine I'm putting in will be obd1.

I've been trying to figure out after market MPG displays, or maybe even making my own. THis is much more difficult than it seems. There are so many variables in calculating MPG that it is would probably be easier to find a way to convert a obd2 ecu to run my engine.

I prefer the old fashion

I prefer the old fashion way. It's more interesting to see a stick go up than flashing lights. But it's gay that it only goes up to 6100 for my car. The rest it shows but it's red, meanining the stick doesn't go into that area.
