I would go for the Suzuki with the vw engine. Good body and bulletproof engine.

If you want something cheap go for the geo metro. Get a 5 speed 1liter engine. If you need more room just take out the front and rear seats and you should have plenty of space for your shipments.

I think the Metro is one of the cheapest car I've seen. The parts for them are dirt cheap. You can get a whole engine rebuild kit for $200. Parts for the metro are readily available.

If you could find a Geo Metro in good condition and you know how to work on cars then yeah. Go buy a metro.

Another note on the 3-cylinder Metro, when it's time for that engine rebuild, if you're husky like me, you can pull the engine block without a cherry picker.

*flexes e-muskles*

And this is why it's on my short list of vehicles to buy in advance of Armageddon. Drop a nice 2-cylinder diesel in it and run it on used motor oil scavenged from junkyards like in some other thread around here. LOL.

This was something I'd considered, but assumed one wouldn't make much if any of an improvement over the van.

I'm thinking of that for the long term plan, but right now its outside of my budget. Short term, likely a Swift or something similar.

My mechanical skills aren't great, so I do need someone else to do the repairs for me, but the cost will be lower ifn its not hard to work on. My Venture requires the engine to be moved to get to half of the plugs, plus a number of other parts, so the price of repairs goes through the roof.

My list right now is:
Escort (preferably wagon)
Focus (preferably ZX5, though likely out of my budget)
Swift/Metro
Pinto (hey, someone was selling a van model out here cheap, they look neat)
Rabbit (preferably diesel)

Price is the big thing for me, it needs to be cheap, profit margin over here is rather lean. As to Civics, I'm a bit nervous about them, pimping them out is a big thing here, and I don't want to risk getting someone's failed project. What about an Odyssey minivan, first generation? I understand its basically a high roof Accord wagon?

I like the Sidekick/Tracker, and the old four cylinder will improve on my current mileage, but not by much, plus there's some reliability issues with the engine. Diesel swap would be good, but a bit pricey, so that's something to save up for.

The route I do is notably different than one might expect. The first section of my day is stop and start work with a fairly high stop density, but the three other sections are two loops of 62 miles split 1/3 2/3 local roads and highway, and the last one is 48 mile loop, mostly freeway. Sometimes there's other stops mixed in with those as well. Its the thing about living out here in the valley, all of the cities here are basically huge suburbs, and the edges are fairly sparse (and I really hate servicing those areas).
