In RI there are some full-serv gas stations as well as the more popular self-serv. Most people will not pay more for it, although I suspect when the weather is severe they will.
I wait in line to get the same pump I always get so that I can get accurate FE calculations.
I know NJ doesn't allow self-serve by law. I think it's Oregon that is the only another full serve only state.
I try to use the same pump, but my time is more valuable than the 10 to 20 cents I'd save at a packed station. I only wait now when cashing in Giant rewards.
It's more of a pushing the envelope thing for me, to see what's possible. And I share the concern about the fuel pump. Notice my latest 1000-mile tank I didn't run it dry. 12 gallons when my biggest fill was 13.8 so I left 1.8 gallons in the bottom. Unless I have a shot at breaking my distance record I won't push it.
Perhaps you need to give some tips to the masses here. I have been able to push my Del Sol past 500 miles and that was cool but now that I see your going past 1000 miles in a Honda Civic I need to change it up. What other than aero mods are you doing to get that kind of MPG!? I know that your commute has a lot to do with it and right now I have a wonderful setup thats 34 miles round trip 100% 50mph highway.
Pulse and glide with eoc. That's the biggest thing. It's a little tougher at 50+ mph, but that's certainly better than 65 or 70. If you do a 45-55 P&G cycle you should be able to kick it a notch higher. Look at getting a gauge - since you ahve a '95 you'll have to wire in a MPGuino instead of a Scangauge. You're doing really well without a gauge.
Scangauge II's are quite pricey so I was thinking of getting an ECOmeter. Gives you not near as much info but the same idea is there at under half the cost.
The UltraGauge is very similar to the ScanGauge (with some advantages and some disadvantages) at a fraction of the price - about the same price as the ECOmeter.
I got 612.3 miles to my last tank. I know I could get more, but it would pretty much have to be all highway driving. Or I would have to start making major modifications with aerodynamics and weight reduction. However, I'm pleased with my FE, and see no reason to really go to such extremes. I like the way my car looks, rides, feels and gets great mpgs.
