Hypermiling: Free FE

Now, I don't have a lot of time, being a busy fellow, which I'm sure everyone is, but Im in the middle of work but wanted to get this out here.

Seeing the new threads with movies and such, everyone provide links to movies or just helpful stuff, and we'll compile a de facto hypermiling thread, which will be linked at every given opportunity.

Ill throw some up later after I kill this book I'm reading.

I'd like to do this as a database. Have people submit tips, from the big to the tiny.

Fields would be such as:

Technique description
Difficulty/Attention required
Effectiveness (big/med/small effect on MPG?)
Potential of technique to irritate other drivers
Level of physical/legal risk
More ??

Then you could, for example ask to see only the techniques with a "big effect" on FE; or only those which are easy/don't require much attentiveness.

Just a thought.

That's a good idea, good idea indeed. I'm thinking something like my online kanji stuff for japanese where each thing has a block with a description and links, then a little movie thing, mm.

Brilliant!

Brilliant D! The user-friendly aspect to attain better FE is probably the biggest hurdle to jump for the new/inexperienced.

As I'm sure we all have, I've spoken to people and they just get the "Deer in the Headlights" look when I try to explain how to hypermile.

I kinda realized that hypermiling is almost like a game -- do well at the easy stuff first, and it unlocks the next level with more, and increasingly difficult options to attain better FE. If you include friends, then it becomes a friendly competition.

...or even "Fantasy Hypermiling". Get a group together at work, and form a "team". You have your linebackers (SUVs), wide receivers (sport coupes), running backs (high horsepower sedans), Quarterback (more efficient vehicles), etc. Whichever team improves with the best percentage over "EPA-combined", wins.

I need to talk to the uber-Matt about doing this. I can set it up on my site, and we can start collecting the tips pronto. Then integrate it back here when Matt has time.

I got to drive my buddys Scion tC and he gets 25-26mpg. I got 36mpg the first time I drove it - it is an automatic and I didn't get into 4th for very long. Sort of blew him away - let him borrow my SG1 now he is getting over 30mpg.
