It's possible if you shift low, but since it's a fake manual, it still controls much for you. I experimented with early shifting by switching from gears 1-2 manually in my Accord, but instead, it acts like the clutch (if it had one) wasn't latched and there was alot of slippage. This hurt mye mileage, but if you can shift at around 2k rpms without it slipping, it should improve your efficiency over a normally driven auto. A real manual will do best though.
I don't think that manually shifting via the autostick will be much better than allowing the trans to shift for itself. I guess if you lived someplace hilly and could use the autostick to pull hills in a taller gear vs downshifting it might help your FE some...
