Cars/Trucks - Overachievers.

Thinking about my Accent (Which in my opinion is an underachiever) got me to thinking about overachievers, It got me to thinking about cars/trucks that are overachievers for what would be expected for such a combo. The following figures are with just prudent driving (No Jack Rabbit Starts and No "charging" the redlight) and no extreme FE techniques.

C4 Corvette with L98 6-Spd Manual - 34 mpg @ 70 mph

Dodge Diplomat V8 Auto - 29-31 mpg @ 60 mph

Chevy/Geo Tracker 4-Door 2.0L 16V 4-Spd Auto - 30 mpg in mixed driving.

1984 Mazda B2000 P/U 5-Spd Manual - 30 mpg City

1995 Dodge 2500 Regular Cab 4x2 w/ Cummins 12V, 5-Spd Manual, 3.54 - 22 mpg pulling a 4000 lb boat in mixed driving. (It got 22 mpg no matter what. Empty, loaded, 75 mph, 55 mph, towing).

1974 Chevy P/U 4x2 with 400 2bbl, TH350 Non-Lock up, 3.31 - 19 mpg @ 60 mph.

Any overachievers you have noticed?

Check out the "Hypermile sleepers" thread (it's linked in my sig). You'll get lots of ideas there.

It's funny you should mention the C4, I was just thinking of it in a hypermiling context recently...

i think any manual car can be overachievers, due to engine braking. I averaged 45 mpg on a 32 mpg combined civic. my prizm automatic now, im just getting the epa 24 combined, which sucks.

Tightwad, what economy are you getting on your Accent and what year is it? I agree it's disappointingly low.

You only got 19 in your 74 Chevy? I had a 74 Chevy C10 4x2 with a 4bbl, TH350, and and air conditioner that thought it was a freezer (it would frost up the windows if given the opportunity). The only real mods I had done to it was I switched the points out for an electronic ignition out of a 75 Chevy van, and I put platinum plugs in it. I got mid to upper 20's in that truck with the cruise set on 60.

EDIT: Re-reading your original post I figured it out. I had a small block 350, and I had a lockup torque converter. My tranny had went out, and I had replaced it with a TH350 from an early 80's C10 with a lockup converter.

I wonder what I could get if I set the cruise for 60... I've broken 20 at 70.
