I just used a sawzall to remove my gauge cluster cover and when I feel like having a fuel efficiency boost I just push the gas needle up.

I did that too but I also fired a nail in the gas gauge so the needle can't ever fall below 1/2 a tank. Now I can't ever run out of gas. :^)
