Odyessy highway trip.

In my 3.5L Honda Odyessy, Using my scangauge I traveled 100 miles mostly on the PA turnpike NE extension(heading north/lots of up hill spots) and a little way on I 80 East and my trip mileage came in at 36.5mpg. I also had my wife, mother and 2 kids in the car with some luggage. At one point (about 2/3 through the trip) I topped out at 46mpg. Hard to believe. When I started out I was shooting for 30mpg.

I just wanted to post that. I am still in disbelief.

Even though I'm down by Philly I know that area that you're talking about. I got good mileage there too. Sure you got some steep hills you gotta climb but what goes up must come down! I was amazed that going down some of the hills I could keep a 70mph glide for over a mile!

i remember coming home from snowboarding once, taking the ne extension. i took my parents windstar with a whole bunch of friends and 3rd gear gave out, so we were stuck in 2nd the whole way back. coming down one of the hills i was able to put it in neutral and coast for a good 10minutes. the crazy thing was we passed some cotton top going 50mph that was on the brakes the whole way down!!! think of all the energy they were wasting by riding the brakes!!!

I'm from down this way too (Exton). Yeah we did a lot of coasting. I did it all in drive though, no neutral coasting. The downhills always gave you enough momentum to "featherfoot" it up hill.

There was a stretch along I 80E we were on. The sign says it was the "5 mile hill" that is where I hit 46 mpg.

On the return trip we came down 33 to bethlehem and continued on 309 until I got back on the TP at quakertown. Had to make a side trip. I was heartbroken I couldn't finish the trip on the open highway.

needless to say my scanqauge checking and hypermiling was getting on my wifes nerves. She is a typical leadfooter. Has no clue about the wasted energy and extra wear and tear on the car by driving the way she does.

She can't understand that racing up to stop at a stop light or stop sign isn't going to get you to your destination any faster.

I've seen 35 mph on highway trips in my '04. 55-60 mph on the flat seems to be the sweet spot - transmission is locked in and can hold it for minor hills, but not too fast for aerodynamics to really hurt.

Never measured the mpg on our 09. Didn't even think about my scangauge to tell the truth. Can't say I've been too impressed, though. Good thing I balanced it out w/ a new Fit.
