If you want to significantly reduce fuel consumption ban drive through windows. Let the lazy mooks park their car and walk inside to order their food or do their banking or pick up their dry cleaning or whatever.
about 1/2 gallon if there is about 4-5 cars in front of you that is on a v6 engine..
Yesterday my ScanGauge told me the day's mpg was 45. I then let engine tick over for about 10 minutes, to warn the oil through before changing it. The ScanGauge then told me I had averaged 26 mpg for the day.
I wonder how many millions of people on the planet did something similar while waiting in the drive through somewhere. I might have way more money than I even imagined if I had the equivalent of what's burned when they could have shut down and gone inside.
I even turn the car off first and then shift into park. It takes maybe a second to do so. Times say 20 trips a week times 52 weeks a year is 1000 seconds or maybe 16 minutes worth of gasoline burning saved a year.
Update: You can currently be fined, but the law is seldom enforced. There is an area in Edinburgh where the tourist buses park and it is heavily policed for drivers leaving their engines running, probably to keep heaters or air con running (it is Scotland so you could need both on the same day).
