Will turbo help fuel economy?

Seems like a lame question, but this goes back to the question of "will more HP help fuel economy or not?"

People are on both sides of the fence, and a lot of the members on this site havn't weighed in yet.

So someone tells me tonight that I should turbo my d15z1 engine. "If you lay easy on the throttle, you'll actually get better economy."

Will running a homemade turbo give me better fuel economy? Does this make sense? will it screw up the ECU and it's fuel/air mixture? Will it eventually damage my engine?

Anyone?

I know that they turbo diesel to get better economy, so how is this any different?
