At ATDS the Blade was tested on a 2004 Honda Civic using the EPA 511 Testing Protocol, which is a combination of the EPA's FTP–75, and Highway Fuel Economy Tests. EPA 511 includes the measurement of three baselines and three tests. The EPA 511 is considered statistically valid.

The same 2004 Honda Civic was road tested for 6-months and the average gas mileage increase has been aproximately 30%.

Hmmmm, I never heard of the blade. It's got that "easy install" appeal. But it isn't compatible with my Saturn :

Couldn't I just cut my stock exhaust tip to match the first or second example?

I'm gonna do more homework on this. I would be happy if it had +- 0 effect on MPG but helped emissions.

JCWhitney sells or sold a muffler tip that uses a spring loaded butterfly to restrict the exhaust during cruise and increase mpg.

The spiral mufflers reduce back pressure and might increase exhaust flow by spiraling the gases.

The Jegs spiral muffler looks like the best deal...not so sure it is sized right for a 4 cylinder though.

When you see a bunch of idiots piling in on a subject and doing the ridicule thing...run don't walk. Just because it's the internet doesn't mean only bright people are on it.

You test things by buying or making them, installing them, and then checking your resulting mileage.

I know, but we do the same sometimes, . Also, it's important to do due-diligence. I think it is *very* interesting that the blade representative stuck around and took the punishment without losing it, so that's a plus for him.

As others have stated, it only helps if I am into the throttle way beyond FE driving. But it is fun once in a while. I am a reformed psycho-driver. I had 8 speeding tickets in a 3 year period. I had to stop. I was driving way too fast for my age. I am kind of a ricer. I will put the same thing on my next japan made car also. I like the way it sounds, and I like the feedback I get from the sound. Not all gray haired drivers drive slow.

I believe Nissan (or maybe it was Mazda) had something like that.... And Autospeed magazine either built an exhaust bypass or talked about such a system....

S/he did freak out at one point... A lot later than I would have expected... But it wasn't terrible, and s/he recomposed her/himself.

That being said... I can't argue with a lab's statement... But the EPA documents outlining the 511 protocol seem to be a bit unclear... Is the 511 their own evaluation program that they do (as the introduction states), or is it something else?

Ok, I skimmed over the thread (12 pages!!!!) and didn't read all of "sabertec's" posts. I was looking to see how long he/she lasted, and it seems she/he was still around at the 9th page.

At $150, it's 3 times the cost of my sucker-limit, so I'm just gonna keep trolling around for information on it.

It claims to reduce emissions (mostly during the cold start-up phase?). It makes me think it has a "filter" that you need to clean, but maybe it's just back-pressuring the exhaust into the cat in order to "cook" the exhaust a little more?!?!?!?

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's valid if they're comparing a car w/ 40k miles on it and who knows what in/on the crankcase/gearbox/wheels to whatever the EPA used to test. Weren't these the guys who said driving around at different dates/times in one of the most traffic ridden areas in CA was a legit version of the EPA test? I smell bull...
