I've used the peanut style, and I have a collection of them. They work ok but can be uncomfortable at times. I've found the headband-earmuff style at Harbor Freight to be quite effective. It's $4...



This thing from Home Depot is also reasonably comfortable and quite effective:

I've wondered about that last one. I assume it's different than earplugs? Don't go in as far or something? Always made me think of those retainers with the head band for some bizarre reason...

Yes, it's different than the "peanut" style earplugs. It's similar but not quite the same. As you say, doesn't go in as far, and is a little less soft. I think it was slightly less comfortable than the earmuff one. I don't remember, it's been a couple years since I've worn either.

After the third time I had a solder joint get yanked and stopped working I caved in and ordered the real Arriva headphones. They were $35 with shipping, but they'll be my birthday gift to myself (I actually have a quota for treating myself because I never will otherwise). They're awesome (arrived today)! My hearing protector headphones still work fine, though.
