Otto cycle is spark ignition.

Diesel is compression ignition.

HCCI is basically combination of the 2. It’s compression ignition using gasoline instead of diesel. There is no spark to ignite the mixture. Instead, like a diesel, the density and temperature of the mixture are increased by compression until the mixture ignites spontaneously.

Maybe you should Wicki "Otto Cycle". Diesel and gas are both Otto cycle.

Similar, but not the same. Diesel is compression ignition, otto cycle is spark ignition.

You are backpedaling now. Otto cycle is not determined by the ignition source.

I'm not backpedaling at all. The two are not the same. Similar because the diesel is based off the otto cycle.

So which is correct? This statement or your latest.

As I stated check Wicki, Otto cycle includes both diesel and spark ignition. HCCI engines use spark ignition initially until the heat energy necessary to obtain HCCI becomes available.

The operational cycle remains Otto regardless of the ignition source.

Provide proof of your definition with references, as I have.

gary

Both statements are correct. Otto cycle is spark ignition. Diesel-cycle is based off the otto-cycle but uses compression ignition.

I see no references in your posts but here's mine:

I think the conclusion is obvious to all the other readers of this thread.

What's that? That you are trying to prove me wrong and discredit me?

I thought that the consensus was that HAI/WAI works for some vehicles, and doesn't for others depending on engine and fuel system design. I don't think there's anyone here saying that it will work on any vehicle.
