Turn on the a/c. My IAT rises 30 - 40 degrees with the a/c on.

Is that one of your dry jokes? No A/C in my vehicle, alas.

No, I'm serious. My IAT rises a lot with the a/c on.

Yes, but is that useful from net overall energy savings point of view? Thermodynamic humor, gets me every time!

I'd say its at least a break even. Being as the truck gets better mileage at highway speed with the windows up & a/c on. The higher temps, with a wider throttle position will allow the engine to run more efficiently with less pumping losses.

That's cool then. Nice energy recapture.

Showed my WAI setup to my mechanic and for once he didn't think I was crazy (our winters are pretty cold). He thinks that I may simply be sucking off all the heat that the relatively low surface area manifold can provide, limiting my temp. He suggested making a surround for the catalytic converter (it's mounted vertically right below the manifold). Not sure when I'd get around to that exactly, but it's food for thought.

Oh, and he thought my interior mirror project was crazy, so I got my fix on that score.

if you look at factory intake heaters on like TBI. all they are, is a dyer pipe connected to a pipe welded onto the heat sheild. you could easily weld a 2.5 or 3" OD pipe on a heatshield and run a dyer hose from it to where the stock box inducts "cold air"

But wouldn't get nearly as much benefit from that ^^ unless you block off the cold air source as well.

I think Jay's IAT's raise w/ A/C because his secondary fan kicks in (assuming he doesn't have a clutch fan hooked up, but even if he does, idle picks up and the fan pulls more). When that happens, more air is pulled through the condensor, then the HOT radiator.... and into the intake.

But yes, sometimes A/C use at highway speed is beneficial from the aero advantage of windows up.
