Rick, It's been a month since you summarized. Would you mind giving us cumulative results again?

I tried premium gas for several tanks; Though I could see a higher advance in my ignition timing, I could not see the mpg difference over the short run. I appreciate your extended experiment, and the resulting figures.

your car is adnvaced enough in that it can change its timing according to what gas is in it, now a fully carbed car will perform differently yeilding different mpg depending on what gas is used.(in theory it shouldnt but some cars just liek to run on certian octanes better)

Summaries are every five refills when I switch gas. I'm on the last tank of regular Shell now, so you should see one in a week or so.

Expect them to come a little less often now that I'm laid off -- not driving to work should cut out 150 miles of required traveling per week.

Figured I'd add my 2?...

My brother learned in his Auto Tech School that usually, most of the detergents' effects last about 10,000 miles...assuming that it is a thorough cleaning...

So one doesn't need to be wasting the money on all the cleaners for EVERY tank...

Fifth and final regular tank complete; 30.68MPG over 330 miles. Refilled with random el-cheapo regular.

Cumulative results:

Shell V-Power: 3400 miles and 100.074 gallons at 33.97 MPG.
Shell Mid-Grade: 3453 miles and 102.555 gallons at 33.67 MPG.
Shell Regular: 3485 miles and 104.52 gallons at 33.34 MPG.
Random Regular: 3310 miles and 98.543 gallons at 33.59 MPG.


Capsule summary, using five fills for each section (dates are dates of fills):

12/14 - 01/19 Shell Regular: 1798 miles and 54.83 gallons at 32.79 MPG.
11/20 - 12/11 Shell Mid-Grade: 1789 miles and 54.295 gallons at 32.95 MPG.
10/22 - 11/15 Shell V-Power: 1823 miles and 54.774 gallons at 33.28 MPG.
09/26 - 10/17 Random Regular: 1871 miles and 54.413 gallons at 34.39 MPG.
08/29 - 09/20 Shell Regular: 1687 miles and 49.69 gallons at 33.94 MPG.
08/06 - 08/27 Shell Mid-Grade: 1664 miles and 48.26 gallons at 34.48 MPG.
07/06 - 07/31 Shell V-Power: 1577 miles and 45.30 gallons at 34.81 MPG.
06/11 - 06/30 Random Regular: 1439 miles and 44.13 gallons at 32.61 MPG.

Following the Clean Air Acts in the US in the 90's, the plastics industries were willing to purchase certain portions of petroleum, and fuels, both gasoline and diesel, have been continually depleated ever since.

Because those acts gave manufacturers specifics on the formulations of what fuel was going to be like, a couple things happened. First, the base is the same more or less. Next, there's a lot of what one would call "coopertition" where fuels are used where they can be used. Yes, BP might be making something here, but Citgo might be low, so everyone replentishes each other to keep the market moving forward selling fuel every day everywhere.

The additive packages make up a very small portion of the actual fuel.

No, I don't have any links to back it up as this was what we learned racing through the Clean Air Acts of the late 80's and the 90's. Eventually, no street gas really is very different from another.
