Ah, found it:

************* said a '95 Prizm (which is a Geo). The old EPA ratings were 28/34, which translates to roughly 32/41 in imperial gallons (my calculation).

However, the original poster, bowtieguy, is from Florida, not known for its use of imperial gallons. Then I realized he said a Chevy Prizm, not a Geo Prizm. The old EPA numbers for 2002 Chevy Prizm are 32/41, just as he posted.

The 31/38 numbers are the old EPA rating of 2000 Chevy Prizm.

What a difference a few years can make...

hah you're right! You debunked the mystery! :D

in 2000, toyota implimented the VVTI motor giving FE a needed boost, perhaps to keep up with honda?

BTW, consumer reports named the 2000-2002 prizm as one of the best(and most efficient) used cars. CR doesn't hold a lot of pull with me, but they can't always be wrong(or right).

since i found mine by mistake, certainly it is a true sleeper!

FE Sleepers

I had a '96 Chevy Corsica with the 2.2 OHV and 3-speed Auto.
Usually got 32mpg although a few times of 34 and one low of 27 (my 17yr old son drove it). Really happy with it but it didn't hold up so good to a 2 3/4 times roll over (again my 17yr old son).

It has more cargo room than a Jeep Liberty, seats 5, and is actually 1/2" SHORTER than its smaller brother the Malibu. 40+ MPG for a "station wagon"!!!

You allways talk about your great FE on your MAXX but all your gas logs show about 32mpg. Which is pretty good but, lets see those 40+ numbers.

2000 Sunfire 2.2l 5MT is EPA rated 21/24/31, so mid-thirties at high speed without any hypermiling effort sounds like a hypermile sleeper to me.

And actually if you look at the "grill" openings, they don't let air go directly on the radiator. I forget if you could block them off completely, but if I remember right the Sunfire is like the old Firebird where it gets all of the air from under the bumper.

Ford Escort - I've had a wagon for almost 10 years now (gave it to my daughter 2 years ago but left it in my name). She claims to break 40mpg every so often, judging by the line of cars I've seen behind her when passing her out on the road, I believe it. :(

I got 37-40mpg in my 94 escort wagon regularly. Also a 92 Saturn SL1 that got 40mpg.

Buick Century that did 32mpg. Pontiac Bonneville that did 30mpg.

My first car was a chevette diesel. Saw 60mpg once. average was over 45mpg.
