Ugliest current production car award
I give it to the Nissan Cube:

I like it.
|
Nope, I still think the Prius is the ugliest new vehicle available right now. If it wasn't a hybrid it would have been dropped by now.
|
Nissan wins again!
If this doesn't make you barf a little in your mouth, nothing will: https://www.automedia.com/NewCarBuyer...uest_ext_1.jpg |
The Cube is far, far worse than that minivan.
|
the cube is an abomination. almost as bad as the honda element.
|
The Cube looks the the end result of some bizarre Photoshop filter. The minivan looks like a whale.
|
I'm sorry everyone... https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...yota-Prius.jpg
This is the ugliest thing to sit on a dealer lot since the Pontiac Aztec. |
All the shapes so far on this thread have at least been pretty clean. Thinking some more about it I believe that visual interest should come from the basic structure of an item, not from stuff tacked on afterwards. I'm hardly the first to observe this, but I buy in. The ugliest cars, to me, run afoul of this principal.
Additionally, shapes adopted for practicality reasons get a pass, whereas form over function always ranks lower. The Cube definitely does badly there. |
I hate that the cube is not even symetrical. The rear quarters are different on the left and right. Also, the rear door is fugly.
I also dislike the front end of the 07-current CR-V. What's up with the grille? Current Body Style Mitsubishi Eclipse. Need I say more? |
Quote:
the eclipse is pretty fugly IMO but to me the ugliest is the prius.... the cube thing isnt that bad. looks like a sportier element. whats with elements plastic fenders lol |
I didn't mention the Element. I should. The gray plastic fenders are pretty bad. The newer EX and SC versions had body-color fenders (I used to work for Honda), but the grille and rear demi-doors are still ugly. And the styling has had very little updating since it debuted. They gave it a new grille (no one noticed) and the aforementioned painted fenders (on most models). At least the interior is pretty sweet, if you don't mind seating for only four and not being able to exit the rear unless the front doors are open.
|
The new eclipse... that's a fat chick's car.
|
Honorable mentions:
Nissan Sentra (profile - the rear windows look like an afterthought) Nissan Maxima (huge flat grille) the entire Hummer line Smart ForTwo (looks like it's from of a Caricature) BMW Z4 (I hate the side sculpting) Ford Econoline van (no full restyle in almost 20 years, plus the grille is ridiculous) VW New Beetle (sorry, it is a Golf without the practicality or looks) |
It's not that bad - rounded corners and probably lots of room inside. It has a radical wrap around window in the right rear that is not shown. Somewhat of a ripoff of the 1st gen xB.
|
The Cube at least has a art deco feel about it. Compared to another cube like vehicle, the Ford Flex, the Cube looks alot better. I'd also nominated the Chrysler Sebring. I'm not sure how even comment on it... just.. blah.
https://www.kentomatic.com/wp-content.../ford-flex.jpg |
Not just a Sebring, but the Sebring convertible is so ugly that only middle aged women drive it.
|
I know this isn't a current production car, but I always disliked the Chevy citation- it lives up to it's name in a beauty contest
https://www.canadiandriver.com/articl...81citation.jpg |
I was trying to avoid singling out anybody's car, but what the hey: the PT Cruiser. Dislike the styling and it also makes me think of a tiny hearse for some reason. At least they're stopping it.
|
No, but the Citation was just about the roomiest hatchback ever to make it to market.
|
I'm a big fan of the Mazda 3 hatchback(mazdaspeed of course).... Never sat in a citation.
|
Nothing on the Citation screams "ugly" to me... I just find it bland.
Think of it as yesteryear's Chevy Impala. That reminds me... I know they just cancelled it, but the 2000-2004 (?) (before the face lift) Monte Carlo was absolutely hideous. |
I agree. More uninspired than ugly per se. Uncreatively applied aerodynamics has had that effect on a lot of cars as well.
|
Which vintage Impala? I can't think of one off the top of my head that I didn't like, except for the current model.
-Jay |
awww the citation is one of the roomiest as mentioned above, to me they look like a wider, roomier chevette lol. id love to have one especially the turbo v6 one! mmmmmmmmmmm
the new impallas (like 2000+) arent too bad imo. yea the PT cruiser isnt my cup o tea either... i like the HHR better. one "sportier" car ive never liked is the audi TT. dunno what it is prolly cuz the front looks like the back. |
Quote:
I call the HHR the Me-Too Cruiser. The styling is decent, but the interior efficiency sucks. It is built on the Cobalt platform, so in order to have the flared fenders, the center of the car is narrow. The interior is so narrow the window switches are on the console (in front of the shifter), because the door panels are too thin to hold them. I agree on the 1st Generation Audi TT. You can't tell whether they're coming or going! |
The TT appeals to my love of symmetry!
|
Yes!!! The Citation is a big, roomy Chevette.
|
Late model Impalas appear lame on the road. In the showroom they're quite impressive. They seem way larger and cooler up close.
|
i cant believe you guys didnt mention anything from the subaru lineup. how about the tribeca from a couple years ago? and even my car the 06-07 impreza? or any of the imprezas for that matter? i think the cube looks a lot better than they do.
|
I like the Caprice based Impalas of the 90's
|
I actually like the 2009 Subaru hatch backs.

How about we try and identify the qualities we dislike? I don't like superfluous aesthetic add ons and choices that seriously compromise functionality, for example. Of course that's an engineer's eye, so your results may vary.
Anyone else have pet peeves in design? |
I guess if I had to say the thing about the Prius I hate the most, I'd say it was the headlight design. Damn thing looks like a bug flying at you.
|
I can see that. They're weirdly proportioned and a little big. Overly aggressive grilles are another one for me. Like the one on the new Thunderbirds, for example.
|
I know it's not available on the US market, but I defy you to find something uglier than the Fiat Multipla.
https://www.autocult.com.au/img/gallery/hologram158.jpg |
As someone else mentioned earlier, the gaudy grille on the Ford Econoline really looks awful and out of place.
Here's what it looked like since the early 1990s: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...-Econoline.jpg A somewhat timeless design, IMO. It doesn't look exciting, it doesn't look interesting, it doesn't look scummy...it just looks professional. When the roofer or plumber shows up it's vaguely comforting to see him in that instead of a rotted out 1984 Ford Ranger. Minor changes every few years to the grille, headlights, mirrors, and other details kept it from looking too old without taking way its plain professionalism. Here's what it looks like now: https://www.edmunds.com/pictures/VEHI...33-396x249.jpg Substantially, it's visibly the same, except for that awful grille. Might as well be one of these: https://img333.imageshack.us/img333/6...ll429998lk.jpg |
That's astounding. Were they on an incredibly tight deadline or something? File that under "designs which look bodged together over a weekend from multiple cars". The second generation Multipla, while no looker, is much more the way it should've looked to begin with.

Maybe we will see the Multipla in the states, with the chrysler-fiat dial. That multipla is a mighty little vehicle - seats 6, boxy shape for huge cargo capacity, but not a monster SUV.
