Shipping Idea

Ok, let me know if this sounds reasonable to anyone else. There are a decent amount of members here on the site and we're all pretty well spread out over the US. Would anyone be willing participate in a hand off shipping plan? Basically, if someone needs something shipped from the west coast to the east coast, or east to west, it could make its way from one member to the next. This would really only be worth it on heavy or big items (engines, transmission, etc), but could be a real cost saver. I often go as far south as LA and I'm up in Reno, NV all the time also...

Thoughts?

SVOboy 06-28-2006 05:00 PM

Indeed, I can do a bit of east (haha, all the way to jared's place on the shore) to west (There are a fair bit of us in penn) and NY to DE/MD.

:p

Im good for Pitt to Chicago. It's always nice to visit the parental units.

The Toecutter 06-28-2006 05:46 PM

Since I'm currently using the vehicles my parents use, it's not a given that l'l be able to help yet. But whenever my own vehicle is road ready(The Ford Contour) I'm good for going all the way to Kansas City from St. Louis, or any other place within that radius.

SVOboy 06-28-2006 05:49 PM

Just so it's out in the open, this all came up from me wanting to buy bunger's z1, :p

Matt Timion 06-28-2006 06:10 PM

There is also the consideration that shipping an engine would probably cost around $200. The money we'd all spend in gas AND the time spent driving would be much more than that.

That being said, I've never been to Wendover, but I might want to visit sometime. Is that close to Reno?

GasSavers_DaX 06-28-2006 06:19 PM

Haha, there is NOBODY out my way.

The spare, or the whole setup?

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:05 PM

The one he's using now. The spare is evidently almost dead.

What percentage of the mpg gain would you say comes from the head as

opposed to going all z1?

If I wanted to swap to a z1 head, I would still need to swap mpfi/dizzy/ecu, correct?

labor wise i'd really like to just do the head swap, but either way i have to swap out all that stuff :(

I don't think the 8valve swap is even worth all the work, what do you think?

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:20 PM

The thing about the z1 head is that it will give super high compression (~12.3:1 CR) because the z1 has a very small combustion chamber and very dished pistons. You might be able to do it with premium gas, which I've been considering, but Iono. Anyway, yeah, mpfi, dizzy, ecu, la la la.

8 valve goodness will be noted when I get mine done. I just talked to my employer, over the next two weeks I"ll prolly get 125-150 of work time in, so it'll def get done. Just gotta buy the ish, dad's bring my c clamp valve compressors tomorrow, :p

budomove 06-28-2006 07:22 PM

Good for you! 125-150 hours? Wow. Congrats on finding work, that's what i need. :o

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:24 PM

Dollars, damn, 75 hours a week is nuts. It's just a random job I've had for a while.

budomove 06-28-2006 07:26 PM

Ben, is that a b7 head on it or b8? which is going on there? Is the bottom of the engine sstill from your stock 16 valve?

budomove 06-28-2006 07:27 PM

better than no dollars. :D

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:28 PM

The b7 head is just a donor, the b8 will be going on, and the block will stay stock b2.

budomove 06-28-2006 07:30 PM

It still has the b2 head on there then? You got 59.? mpg with a 16 valve?!

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:31 PM

b2 is on there, I've not gotten 59 to a tank, my best segment is still just 59.3, :p

budomove 06-28-2006 07:33 PM

And you have an si mpfi im on there? Don't you need an hf one?

If I wanted to go mpfi, i would need the si one, but then couldn't hook that up to an 8 valve if i decided to swap heads later, huh?

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:36 PM

I have dan's I think, the rather neutral manifold. The funny thing about 8 valve stuff is that it's almost always free, like everything I have that came off an 8 valve engine that I own, :p

budomove 06-28-2006 07:44 PM

You told me a while back that the 8v needs an hf im, whereas my b1 requires an si im. I also vaguely recall you saying that the b2 takes the hf im, even though it is a 16v. You had said that it was closely related to the 8v, whereas mine has compatability with the si.

If this is true, then i need an si im, but switch to hf im when i go 8v. whew. :(

SVOboy 06-28-2006 07:46 PM

You've got it. Mine is the same as yours, but I used the CX (similar to hf) IM where I shouldn't have and now I'm getting trouble because of it, so blah.

Anyway, you could always buy that cx swap and it'd have all the mpfi **** and head and everything.

Gary Palmer 06-29-2006 09:56 AM

Somehow, I think this thread wandered, a bit.

I'm in Ventura, CA. I wouldn't have a problem doing some degree of delivery pickup. I get LA, San Diego, Las Vegas on occassion, but it's not very predictable.

Gary Palmer 06-29-2006 09:59 AM

:oMatt: Anytime your in Wendover, you could always drive to Reno, it is a very gorgeous, lovely drive!
