Gas Prices

Ack! Been a while since I've stopped by. I updated my gaslog and found my MPG down below Hypermiler status :( My "Service Engine Soon" light has been on for about 2 months now, I'm sure it's not helping.

Got to get me a ScanGauge ASAP!

Anways, thought I'd do a quick poll to see where gas prices are in the US.

Reply if you wish!

(PS - My prices right now are about $3.93)

Hateful 05-29-2008 05:17 AM

I selected below $4 because regular is or was at $3.899, but I use premium at $4.099 last fill up. ScanGauge is a wonderful thing to adjust driving habits with and reads engine codes too,but I've had no codes to read yet. I was ordering my SG within two weeks of going to the first hypermiling site. I felt a bit left out without one.

96hb 05-29-2008 06:16 AM

$3.77 in South Carolina

You use premium in your caviler?.....?

GasSavers_BIBI 05-29-2008 07:21 AM

I voted for more then 4.50 but I'm in Canada, so sorry didn't read the post before votting.

Anyway here its 1.38 a liter, so 5.20$ a gallon.

JJJJJ I do love my VX and my new O2 sensor...

GasSavers_BEEF 05-29-2008 09:44 AM

WOW it's $5.20 in canada. I was up there last november. they were fussing about gas prices because they were told that the reason the prices were higher than the states was because of the strength of the US dollar. when I was there the exchange rate was about $1.06US to $1canadian.

they were wondering where that theory about the strength of the US dollar went. not sure how the US dollar stacks up to canadian money right now.

*edit* it was last october, my bad.

Hateful 05-29-2008 10:59 AM

yes; it's only 20 cent higher than regular so as a percentage it's lower than before. I think it keeps my motor cleaner and just feels like it's running better with premium. I understand that not everyone is lucky enough to drive a Cavalier and don't want to spend more to maintain these lesser cars.

96hb 05-29-2008 11:08 AM

LOL! Dude, your butt dyno is failing you, and all you are doing is wasting money by putting premium in. But more power to ya if you think you gotta have it.

Or more money to the oil companies and Saudis.

Seriously if your car doesn't require it, then you are just wasting your money. Just because it is called "premium" doesn't mean that it is better. It is designed to run on higher compression engines.

But do a test yourself. Run 5 tanks premium and 5 regular and see what your FE is.

I did try regular before I started hypermiling; I went from 27mpg to 23mpg on the tank and a noticeable power loss.

gloriousmidget 05-29-2008 02:28 PM

Mostly around $3.75 in Oklahoma

GasSavers_JoeBob 05-29-2008 05:28 PM

Just saw the last station in my area trip over 400 cents per gallon in the last day or two (Costco Lancaster)...Tuesday I paid 397.9 and today at the same station I paid 404.9. Last Friday it was 390.9. I also noticed more people shutting off their engines in line, but maybe it was because the weather was nice, and not hot enough to need to keep the A/C on.

I'm the same way I run nothing but premium, even in my lawn mower.
For the same reason, it runs better, longer.

Way I see things you pay either at the pump or later at the shop.

101mpg 05-30-2008 07:01 AM

$4.099 in WV, 89 is $4.199. I remember when it used to be .899 and .999 - wow - apparently it STILL costs 10? difference for them to put in additives that make your gasoline not burn!

One of these days someone will distill their gasoline and figure out how to run it on the fumes of a LOT lower octane gasoline and get 150 MPG out of a 4000 pound car.

VetteOwner 05-30-2008 07:35 AM

my chevette does get 5-1= mpg better on midgrade over regular (both E 10 mind u) dunno why cuz runs smooth starts easy on either type...i can get them for the same price (different stations) so its win win for me for using midgrade in it.

s-10 it doesnt matter...(F/I so ti adjusts timign and all that fun stuff accordingly)

but please don't run premium in a lawnmower... they have like a 4:1 compression ratio...you could run a lawnmower off booze if u wanted to the compressions so low...i service lawnmowers as my job and i have yet to have a fuel (gasoline only) problem, most of the time its grass dirt , etc clogging the intake screen in the gas tank... or their trying to use 3 year old gas that looks like tea...what kills lawnmowers is lack of oil (not cleanliness of oil, just lack of it) heck i just changed the oil last year in one of our pushmowers since it was new in 1989...sure it was black but we kept it topped off.

heck my model A engine has a 4:1 ratio, theres lots of storys about during the depression of people running them off moonshine...

if u want your engine to be clean just run a bottle of injector cleaner thru the gas tank every month or so, but out of all the modern car engines ive taken apart they've all had clean valves and clean everything (most of em were junkyard specials)

Hmm....is brandy better than stale gas? I'm pretty sure I've got most of a large bottle old crappy brandy that I don't like, I'd love to burn it off in my mower.

If I get a still, can I use all the old cheap gift wine that's rotting in bottles in my house?

My mower runs on beer alone.

I drink a beer, then start pushing it. The 20" reel starts spinning as I push, the grass cuts and looks like a golf course professional cut it, and I'm happy.

Then I refill the motor with more beer when I'm done. You know, to keep it in primed...er...prime shape.

hahaha Can't beat the look of a reel mowed yard.

theholycow 05-30-2008 10:14 AM

Reel mowers are very cool, and if my lawn was smaller I'd use one. My lawn isn't huge but I'm way too lazy to walk so I have a 15hp lawn tractor.

Note to self: Find Model A, make moonshine.

To be honest it is no harder for me to push than the old 80lb + gas mower was. In fact in many ways I go a lot faster with it.

My lawn is kinda big but not overly so. Gets the job done. Plus, again, it's beer powered, and as luck would have it, I'm a home brewer, so it's like free fuel. Win win.

haha i was suprised that i saw that they still make new reel mowers, lowes have em:p

That's where I got mine. They're a lot easier to push than the old Prison Mowers from the 1950's. I'd rate it as easy as my old gas mower without question. And my old mower was self propelled yet.

Got it at lowes, heh. Brill, a German company, makes one that I hear is even easier to push (easier? how?) and only needs sharpened ever 7 to 10 years.

Beats using gasoline, the yard doesn't stink of petrol when I'm done mowing, I can wear regular shoes and not have them turn green and gross and can mow any time of the day or night without annoying the neighbors. Best investment I ever made in my lawn, I highly recommend one if you're already using a push gasoline mower and have a regular to small sized yard.

Not all of them do this anymore. The last time I tried to get my computer scanned I had to go to 5 different auto parts places before I found one that would do it (for free). Several of them wanted to charge (upwards of $35), and others said "we don't do that anymore because of the hassle". I like the old Honda system thats on my CRX. It just has a LED that blinks and that tells you whats wrong. No need for a fancy reader.

Nothing beats the system that was on my 1987 Cadillac Deville. Press the right buttons and it could display the codes on the climate control and fuel displays, and it could also display live sensor data...most of the stuff for which I have a $240 cable hooking my laptop to my VW.

well win win till ya "overflow the tank":D then the yard looks like a picaso paitning:D :D :D :D

As to the scanning, I just ordered a ScanGaugeII. I didn't even know anyplace offered a free scan. Around my area it runs $65. Last scan they told me to get new wires and plugs, some sort of misfire code. Replaced the wires and plugs, reset the computer, and whammo, it came back in about 2 days. :(

This time I'll track it down myself.

So... umm... :D I kinda decided to try running tea-looking gas in my mower. I saw it sitting there in a jug near the mower, and remembered you mentioning it, so I gave it a go as a joke. The mower is old and needs work anyway. What problem results when people use such old gas? Gunking up the carburetor?

It always runs rough, sounding like it would stall maybe every 5 seconds or so, but on this old gas it began belching smoke in those times as well as any time it gets loaded (engage the blades or dump the clutch in 6th gear). Then, while JDA (just driving along) at a steady load (6th gear, no blades disengaged) it stalled. It did restart easily. It was kinda funny. :D

R.I.D.E. 06-08-2008 11:05 AM

You can always tell old gas by the smell.

gary

$5.26 per US gallon here on Vancouver Island. The big boys in their pickups are clenching really hard right now.

GasSavers_JoeBob 06-08-2008 05:15 PM

Can I change my vote? The cheapest gas here now is 433.9/g.

GasSavers_Winnie 06-08-2008 05:16 PM

Sorry that I didn't read the details before voting as well. Canada price is about $5.00 a gallon. Good thing we have a good oil supply here or we'd be paying big time.

If it wasn't for you guys helping keep my consumption down, I'd be running a dog sled to get around! When does this nonsense stop?

ShadowWorks 06-08-2008 05:50 PM

I pay ?1.21 per litre,, a gallon in the UK is 4.5 litres ?5.45 which is around $11.00 a gallon, I get around 24mpg on a good day and 18mpg on bad days.
