Where to buy a D15B6?
I have recently acquired a 1991 Honda CRX HF, the last owner blew the head gasket and drove it after that until it wouldn't turn over! So I am in search of a new engine. I have found a few places that can get one but the cost is going to be close to a thousand, does ANYONE know a reputable place to buy one for cheaper?
BTW this website is inspiring, thanks! |
When it comes to something of this age it will be hard to find a good motor with low miles. You may want to do a build. Building a d-series honda is cheap.

Yeah- you can get a motor at a pull a part for around $125 and then rebuild it. I just spent about $400 in parts and machine shop labor (head job, decked/hot tanked block/they checked/polished the crank) rebuilding a D13 a few months ago (I did all of the assembly/teardown myself). The bearings are pretty expensive if you get them from Honda- but this is the only way to get them fit correctly unless you have the crank ground. Maybe you'd be lucky and not need bearings with some junkyard engines.

One more idea: car-part.com
Most of these junkyards will have a 30 day warranty against knocking and excessive oil consumption. |
Hey thanks for the responses, it is sounding like the rebuild is what most people are doing when it comes to this situation would also cost less and isn't such a gamble. I heard that the 16vavle engines get roughly the same mpg, and you can bolt all the 8valve components up to it, is this remotely true?
|
Well you may want to be careful when selecting the head. If you are going to keep the HF tranny then you want to keep the 8 valve head. The reason is because the 8 valve head has a cam specific for low end torque. If you are going to put a dx or si tranny in your car then you definitely want to put on the 16 valve head.
When it comes to ordering parts I would check out Rockauto.com. They generally will be out any competitor. |
FYI
Civic CX 92 head 12100-PM8-A11 https://bkhondaparts.com/billkay/jsp/...itch=&hidIrno= CRX HF Head 12100-PM8-A11 https://bkhondaparts.com/billkay/jsp/...itch=&hidIrno= CX Piston and crank https://bkhondaparts.com/billkay/jsp/...itch=&hidIrno= DX Piston and crank https://bkhondaparts.com/billkay/jsp/...itch=&hidIrno= Notice the lack of available parts for the pistons on an HF https://bkhondaparts.com/billkay/jsp/...o=%7C002%7C003 So you can see that the CX engine is the HF head on the DX Block. You could probably get away with the whole CX engine with the MPFI from your HF and the smog guy wouldn't notice |
Ahhh thanks for the info that helps me quite a bit. Has anyone dealt with or heard of Rising Sun in Chico CA? They have engines for 895.00, which is a little more than I wanted to pay.
|
Actually the CX head isn't the same as the HF head. I am not certain on the cam profile, but what I am certain on is that the HF head has roller rockers, and the CX head has the flat tappet rockers. But there is no reason why you can't use a dx block with HF pistons and head.

I think you will not find a JDM Japanese D15B6 engine. When I went through all this mess a year ago there were none available. What we got shipped ended up being a D15B2 DX engine which we used the bottom end off of. $895 is way too high of price. $395 seems to be the going price. You could get a VTEC-E engine for around that price but would have to do the wiring for OBD-1 and come up with some other parts. Then you would have to take it to the referee to get the swap approved "Actually the CX head isn't the same as the HF head. I am not certain on the cam profile, but what I am certain on is that the HF head has roller rockers, and the CX head has the flat tappet rockers. But there is no reason why you can't use a dx block with HF pistons and head." I was suprised they had the same number for the part. HF heads in good condition are fairly hard to come by. The CX head is the same casting as the HF. In my car I have the CX head with all the cam parts off the HF head |
