Your favourite car movie?
 

So what's your favourite car movie? Mine's the first The Fast and the Furious, the second and third ones were stupid and relied on to much computer generated special effects; I'm where have you seen a drift with squealing tires but no smoke? I'm hoping the new one is better.

The Gumball Rally, I guess. Been a while since I've seen it, though.

In 1973, there was a movie called "Gone in Sixty Seconds".

Not the one from 2000.

Unfortunately when they re-released the original movie to DVD, they changed all of the original music and ruined it. Fortunately I still have my VHS of the original...

The movie is about 45 minutes of setup, then a 45-minute car chase scene. Critics would be appalled (this probably isn't even "B" movie material) but it is a car-enthusiasts dream. https://www.gonein60seconds.com/gone.htm

I was surprised how good the car chase scenes in the Bourne movies were. Those movies were one of the few times I enjoyed the movie more than the book.

The Russian tank used in a car chase was amusing in Goldeneye. Raiders of the Lost Ark's truck scene's got to be worth some sort of mention. Terrible a movie as it was, the Law & Order movie Exiled (I think that was the name) had a great car chase: they chase a guy for a bit and he loses them around a corner and they don't know which way he went. End of chase. Gets points for breaking the stereotype.

Cobra and the '49-'51 Mercury!

I like the ones without all the fake-looking special effects. Give me the Bourne movies (see a Car and Driver artice a few years back which explains how the special effects in that one were done) and Smokey and the Bandit.

I can't stand it when there is an impact but no damage. I hate it worse when they show damage in one shot, but no damage in the next shot. Most of all, I hate cars that ramp over objects that have railings, etc. at the end but never hit them. In "The Transporter" the BMW drives off a bridge with a huge concrete barrier, yet it somehow does not hit the barrier.

Did you see the Starsky & Hutch movie? I didn't really enjoy it, but the part where they end with the car doing a jump, and then show what actually happened to it when it slammed back down was pretty interesting.

While not a car movie, Children of Men had a continuous 14 minute scene that took place inside a moving car. Not cuts for 14 minutes, and the camera moved around. The making of that was definitely worth looking at. They had the camera people on the roof and a remote controlled movable camera inside the car. The seats could fold back so the actors could get out of the way of the camera. The director tried to minimize cutting in that whole film. Too bad the story sort of dragged at the end.
