Haha, that was the first thought that came to mind.

Flying isn't that bad either. Yeah, it gets like .4mpg, but if you have 100 people on the plane that is like 40 mpg per person and at 150 it jumps to 60mpgpp. Not bad if you ask me. Most vehicles people travel in don't get even 40, much less 60.

that is the thinking behind the 15 passenger vans.

they aren't that efficient but if you look at a per person mileage, you can't beat it.

There was some figures around for that new airbus that seemed to say about 90mpg/person.

Some small planes offer about 30mpg, which isn't too terrible when you consider you can go point-point whereas over the road on a cross country trip might take as many as 50% extra miles.

Actually, when you think about it my old Bonneville wagon did really well on our roadtrips to Florida and the Outer Banks. It would get about 20 - 22 highway. Five people & 1 dog = over 100 mpg/passenger.

If you were computing the mpg/person for something, would you include the crew? I'm thinking of cruise ships, specifically, since their crew compliment is large. I don't think they should really be counted in that calculation.

I don't think that a cruise ship would be a good example because you aren't so worried about the destination. the boat is a destination within itself. also the crew is about a third or better of the overall head count. we had about 2500 people on the boat and close to 1000 were crew.

I would think that any crew would not be on board if it were not for the paying passengers, so they don't count.
