Our craigslist has an old econoline for sale. Even has photo of it sitting forlornly in a barn, all covered in dust/dirt. I'd love to drag it home and get it going.

To answer the question of "What is it?", it is a Goliath van. Goliath was owned by Borgward and German built. Goliath built a full line of cars along with the vans, but weren't popular enough to sustain their business, and they folded (along with Borgward) about 1961 or so.

Yes, fuel injected two stroke. Ours was a 1957 model, purchased used in 1958. Odometer showed about 12k miles, don't know for sure because the cable was broken, and parts were very scarce in the US. Whenever any of my dad's friends or customers would go to Germany, he'd send a shopping list of parts he wanted. No one ever came back with a speedometer cable, however.

You can see the two-cylinder two stroke engine in one of the pictures.

Borgward also made a turtle backed passanger car, similar to the BMW of the 60's....I believe.

What's the thing on the inside that's shaped like a miniature pickaxe and positioned like a gearshift? What's the thing in front of that thing's point that looks like a pipe end cap sticking out of the dash?

How does the oil get mixed into the fuel? Is it like a modern 2 stroke snowmobile, where it automatically mixes, or like a weedwacker where you have to mix it in the tank?

If its European then it probably needs the fuel mixed when its added to the tank. A friend of mine was stationed in Europe years ago. Their American model Camry was the biggest car on the roads. They had bought an extra car just for short trips to town. If I remember correctly it was an old Mini that had a 2 cycle engine, and they said that the fuel stations sold 2 cycle fuel pre-mixed right from the pump.
