Old Enough to Remember This?
|
Got my drivers license about the same time they were made.
regards gary |
Not old enough to remember 'em new, but studied enough to know them. Would be an interesting little pickemup to have, or a Ranchero. Could be a nice efficient way to get into a pickup for the non-modern like myself.

My friend's dad had one for many years. Weird in a very cool sort of way.
|
I'm not even old enough to have seen any of these on the road.

I've seen them on the road, and once in a blue moon I still do.
What I really like is seeing old restored trucks doing work. That's so cool to me. |
I see them in junk yards every now and then. There are also still a few rolling around the bay.
|
Yeah, I remember those. Chevrolet had a Corvair version of those as well. But here is my favorite:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...h_Pritsche.jpg When I was a kid, we had the microbus version...kinda like this one: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ransporter.jpg Two cylinder, two stroke, fuel injected, front wheel drive, kinda looks like a catbus...very interesting vehicle (but it just couldn't take being used as a TV service van running around the hills in La Crescenta, CA) |

2 stroke, 2 cylinder engine. It sounds like my dad's lawn tractor has a better engine. That has a 4 cycle, 2 cylinder 22 HP Briggs & Stratton engine in it.
|
Fuel injected 2 stroke?
Fuel injected, back in whenever the heck that was? FWD truck? |
Our craigslist has an old econoline for sale. Even has photo of it sitting forlornly in a barn, all covered in dust/dirt. I'd love to drag it home and get it going.

Where's the asking price?
If you've get a few bucks, bid on it. |

To answer the question of "What is it?", it is a Goliath van. Goliath was owned by Borgward and German built. Goliath built a full line of cars along with the vans, but weren't popular enough to sustain their business, and they folded (along with Borgward) about 1961 or so. Yes, fuel injected two stroke. Ours was a 1957 model, purchased used in 1958. Odometer showed about 12k miles, don't know for sure because the cable was broken, and parts were very scarce in the US. Whenever any of my dad's friends or customers would go to Germany, he'd send a shopping list of parts he wanted. No one ever came back with a speedometer cable, however. Yes, FWD. Here is a link to one which was for sale on eBay recently, as of right now the pictures are still up. https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT You can see the two-cylinder two stroke engine in one of the pictures. |
Borgward also made a turtle backed passanger car, similar to the BMW of the 60's....I believe.

How does the oil get mixed into the fuel? Is it like a modern 2 stroke snowmobile, where it automatically mixes, or like a weedwacker where you have to mix it in the tank? |
If its European then it probably needs the fuel mixed when its added to the tank. A friend of mine was stationed in Europe years ago. Their American model Camry was the biggest car on the roads. They had bought an extra car just for short trips to town. If I remember correctly it was an old Mini that had a 2 cycle engine, and they said that the fuel stations sold 2 cycle fuel pre-mixed right from the pump.
