i'm not familiar w/ that year and model, but i had a 95 SL1. it was located inside the passenger side wheel well, mounted horizonally, not vertically. this may explain why it's difficult to locate.

i used to take the wheel off to change it. but if you're more skilled, this may not be necessary.

FYI...

if it's an auto, like my 95, the tranny service is very simple as well. it has a drain plug(no gasket or pan) and a spin-on filter like the oil filter.

i would take out the air cleaner assembly for super easy access to that filter!

On my sister in law's 1999 SC1, the oil filter is directly under the power steering pump (between engine block and firewall) it can't be accessed from the top of the engine bay.

You will need to raise the car on the front passenger side and must also use jack stands to work safely. There are two oil filters under the car. The orange filter is for the automatic transmission and is located nearer to the driver's side of the car. The engine oil filter is behind the engine near the passenger side front wheel well. You will need plenty of rags to catch the old oil when you remove the filter, oil will spill all over the frame member when you remove it. Make sure to check that none of the old filter gasket material remains on the filter mounting surface before you install the new filter.
