No, not with the little electric pumps. I've seen situations where they were mounted both ways and it didn't effect the operation of the pump at all.

just installed my universal tank for a total investment of ~$13USD+ electricity(drill battery charge). that is versus $40+ used and $60+ new for the stock tank!
