gas price prediction for the summer and further?
 

I have been thinking of getting a 4 banger midsize car, since im getting tired of my little geo prizm. Just want something more comfortable, bigger, newer, without breaking the bank in FE.

If gas prices goes up to 4 a gallon i would kick myself since i traded a small geo prizm for a bigger car that drinks more gas.

i was looking at a 02+ camry, 03+ accord, toyota matirx, and possibly a 02+ crv if its the right price. my budget is under 5500.

so what are your predictions? its about 2.80 in seattle now, and its winter. most of the time i do see gas prices go up in summer

I predict that gasoline will stay about the same price it is now, unless it goes up more, or goes down some. In any event, if you can get hold of a car that gets 40+ mpg, or even close, you'll be ahead of the game.



The cars you are listing, IIRC, get similar mileage to what you are driving now. If you want to improve your chances of getting along with $5.00+/gallon gasoline, you'll probably want to go smaller. But if gasoline prices drop, you might be able to afford something bigger yet. But even if the prices drop, you're still ahead if you are driving something that gets better mileage than what you are getting now.

Here in the Bay Area, gas prices are about $2.90 at the cheapest independents, and about $3.10 at the major brand stations. Gas prices always go up in the Summer, but your guess is as good as mine as to how much they'll rise. My guess is prices will easily top $3/gallon nationwide, and $3.60/gallon in CA. That's the normal fluctuation. But if tensions boil over in the Middle East, or the oil companies think up an excuse to raise prices, we could easily see a repeat of 2008.

If your gaslog is any indication, you don't drive enough miles for it to matter.

Damn, and I thought the stations I saw today for $2.60 were expensive...

$2.51 around here is the lowest but I paid $2.589 on sunday - gotta love the $26.00 for 10.041 gallons for 468 miles, and this tank is over 50mpg so far. The price will drop towards the end of the year then slowly increase next year. HOWEVER there is a big predicted increase in oil production in Iraq that should flood the market soon.

Soon enough to ease my heating oil cost for this winter?

Yeah I hope so - 2 million barrels a day now ramping to 22 milllion a day I think was the numbers . . . without any opec price controls. You should get a wood stove however - put the heat where you want it and burn a GREEN energy fuel source.
