After idling for a couple hours with the A/C on. Normal.

Ouch!!! our regular price at most pumps is around 2.93 a gallon. Costco is 2.86 a gallon here.

OTOH, your engine is definitely at operating temperature, so you'll get better mileage while driving. Better to spend a buck or two on gas than suffering from heat stroke, exhaustion, dehydration and having to spend more time and detergent (or trips to the dry cleaners) because you've sweat through all your clothes.

Haven't paid much attention since they became part of Conoco, but 76, at least back in the Union Oil/Unocal days, was pretty expensive.

Yep. 76, Shell and Chevron have always had premium prices.

They have "premium prices" because they're top tier gasoline distributors. They have more detergents and are specifically recommended by manufacturers for this very reason. I'd avoid costco, ARCO, etc because they don't have the same amount of detergents as the top tier gasoline distributors do. Theoretically you can fill up maybe 2 fillups in 10 with the "cheap stuff" and the rest of the fillups with the good stuff.

If you acclimate to the weather, you don't need the A/C at all and if you don't need the A/C, then you won't sweat and therefore you'll actually be comfortable. If there was a word I could teach anyone, it would be acclimatization. Living in a place that is the exact same temperature year round makes our bodies incredibly lazy and consequently won't like adjusting to temperature changes which means you'll either feel cold or hot.

shell and chevron in central florida are very competitive the rest--could be our economy?

I did a bunch of A/C idling and A/C driving today. My FE was awful. :(

$2.49 at Costco here, up from $2.44 a few days ago. Gas seems to be among the cheapest in the country in metro-Atlanta, though.

I had my a/c serviced today in my truck, so I was riding the Harley. With my new mesh jacket even temps near 100 with unthinkable humidity are bearable.
