You misread that..

Powering the Elantra will be a new 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that weighs 74 pounds less than the one it replaces and gets 18% better mileage in highway driving.

But that would be really cool to have a 74lb engine;)

I think the engine in my motorcycle weighs more than 74 lbs. I seem to remember about 10 years ago reading about an engine Ford was experimenting with that was made of high temperature plastic (Teflon I think) that was supposed to be really light, and have a life of about 100,000 miles. (at which time the engine was replaced, not repaired)

My D16Z6 engine weighed around 200lbs.

I also remember Ford and their very light weight plastic engine. I'm trying to find some info.

74 lb... That might be do-able. I'd like a 2 cylinder 1+ litre boxer engine! They're inherently balanced so you save the counterweight balance.

I seem to remember that the 3 cylinder engine in a Geo Metro (BTW rated 43/52MPG new EPA) was light enough for one man to lift out of the car by hand, but I can't find the weight now.
