Re: Motorcycling 2011
01/04/2011, mid 40F temp., got out on my Burgman 650 for a little spin. 25 easy miles. Then rode to the grocery store on my Chinese scoot, 6 miles.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
I've been on a couple of rides around town this year, but I didn't take any pics.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
Well, welcome to the new year fellow SV rider. I too am an all year round rider. I have many other bikes but my SV is my daily and dependable rider. Over 60k miles and wiped out on it twice. She's still rolling strong. I have a new motor for it and own two of them.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
07/01/2011, 4C (39F), the first day melting since Christmas, I brought Teresa back from the workshop where she got new front rim and rear belt sprocket. Reached 66666km by odo (82k+ irl). Here she is with the new parts:

Re: Motorcycling 2011
I've been commuting the whole week by Teresa, and I'm happy about it.
Temps ranging ~0.5-6C (~33-43F), which is not a big issue for me on this 25km (15.5mi) route. Which was rough that was the Tuesday morning fog :D I was practically swimming in milk, slowly, with open visor :D I'd appreciate the rest of January being this nice, but it's improbable not to have frost. We'll see, I won't ride on ice or snow. Mild frost on dry roads are ok. Note for self: go check pressure again after my shift (new rim needs extra monitoring). |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
I want to ride so bad, guys! I've got the itch but I've just been so busy lately I haven't had the time to do much as far as self-motivated relaxation goes.
I'm looking at an '03 Suzuki Marauder 800 sometime real soon. I need something more comfortable and more real-world for my size. Planning to take a few camping trips this year on a motorcycle and a cruiser is gonna be my choice of transportation for this. Going to buy some luggage and just hit the open road a few times. Swim in creeks, eat spam, camp on the roadside.... you know, grow some chest hair. :D |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Sounds like fun, except for the eating SPAM part. ;)

Re: Motorcycling 2011
I rode Saturday in 37*F. I wanted to find this creek where I plan to kayak this summer so I went out trying to retrace the route my friend took to get there last year.
I did 116 miles on the bike; mostly highway at 75mph. Honestly I didn't "freeze to death" until I got home and started un-layering all the sudden the chill started thawing off me and I was frozen!! Found the creek... it was frozen! https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4006_large.jpg |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
I drove out to see my next motorcycle, got to test ride it in sub-freezing temp for little over 2 miles of riding..
|
Re: Motorcycling 2011
What are you looking at buying Cat?
|
Re: Motorcycling 2011
04 Ninja, 78xx mi. needs chain/sprockets/tires.
Picked it up today, rode it around for 16 miles in near feezing temp. https://www.gassavers.org/garage_imag...xz3zrpa3qc.jpg |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Ahhh man, I wanted a yellow one so bad!!
How on earth does it need chain/sprocket at 7,800 miles?? Wanna part with the lower engine cover? Mine's MIA. Noticed you took the last one off of your silver 250. |

Re: Motorcycling 2011
That's far from the record according to the folks on ninja250.org but yeah, i guess the previous owner cared more about his sweet pointless exhaust than he did keeping his chain clean/lubed.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
Lately I rode pretty much in slight frost (like -2-3C), but yesterday I met my limit. I went to Budapest and at the beginning of the way back the battery failed me :( I could only bump start Teresa with some help from a tourist and it's not as easy to do as it is with a 250cc twin. When I finally could leave I was soaking wet with sweat under my gear so the wind chilled me more than anytime before. Today I feel every bit of mine and probably have a light fever. I'll definitely take a nice hot bath when I finish work for today...
Average of this tank (3.1l/100km ~ 75.8mpgUS) became better than my other winter periods, though. lately I often drove slower than before because of the cold wind, and even though I couldn't shift into 5th this way (I'd need to go at least at 70km/h~45mph to do so) the lower aero drag more than makes up for the shorter gear ratio. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Now that the salt has cleared up from the roads I've been able to do some riding the past few days.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
Temp. was near the 70's today, though it was cloudy in the morning, the afternoon got much better. Roads are still covered with gravel and lots of melting snow cause water run-offs across the entertaining twisty roads.
First decent ride on my newly purchased Ninja 250. The Legendary Longwood School https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...b60dfffd5e.jpg Picked up some lunch at the PIG OUT BBQ Pit, Pull pork sand.. yum.. https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...9e91d17f33.jpg Covered Bridge near Valley Forge https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...94fe34b363.jpg Signs of the covered bridge being repaired, but the nearby workbench was infested with carpenter bees, rare sighting in Feb: https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...05af5f71ed.jpg https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...740af2305b.jpg Another covered bridge near the second oldest Waldorf school in the nation: https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...60f4a047c7.jpg https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...a9b9c44091.jpg 170 miles covered before 4PM.. not bad for a first day of riding in 2011. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Today I found some black ice when my rear end started to get loose going up a hill...then a little while later I saw someone out on a motorcycle.
|
Re: Motorcycling 2011
I too am really ready for the non-frosty mornings to arrive. Having been down on the ice and having paid for the parts and time I'm money ahead just waiting until the better weather arrives. 9 month rider and proud of it.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
Those Indians looked brand new to me.. Are they still making new bikes these day?
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...3e2afd7d37.jpg https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...a1e32f9d4e.jpg https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...257ce67b34.jpg Just the leather luggage pieces looks like they cost a pretty penny.. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Yeah, Indian is up & running again. They start at about $30,000 though. Makes Harley look cheap.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
Picked up another SV650S:
https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...c12c5ef8e0.jpg https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...ecedeb34c8.jpg Dead battery and likely needs and valve adjustment due to loud valves at idle, but starts and runs great.. hope to turn a profit on this one. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
I took the advanced rider class today. Exhausting, but it was a lot of fun.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
In the weekend we had our first trip to abroad this year - we went to Austria to attend a Walpurgisnacht...
https://www.deviantart.com/users/outg...2&postcount=19 https://www.deviantart.com/users/outg...3&postcount=20 https://www.deviantart.com/users/outg...5&postcount=21 The intro: The idea conceived during the hiatus between Madoka's 10th and 11th episode (addiction, y'know): I had to visit the model for the series' school which is located in Leoben, Austria. That building always gave me the creeps, it's not far from here, and the surroundings are beautiful. The timing was a given, of course I must go there at Walpurgisnacht. You can imagine how happy I was to learn that a witch festival is really held in the next town, Kapfenberg. This way I had a double target We could celebrate my birthday and shiNIN's name day this way too, and on the top of that there was my 50000km 'anniversary' with Teresa too :D |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Are the units of your Gaslog for Teresa & Ciliegia correct?
Seems to me the unit for your distance traveled for each tank should be recorded in km.. not in miles, your last entry to Teresa of 300.87 (miles) for 3.815 (gallons) of fuel consumed looks overly exaggerated. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
...checking...
484.2km / 300.87 miles 14.44l / 3.815 gal(US) 2.98l/100km / 78.86mpg I don't see the problem. It's almost at the lifetime average. Did I overlook something? |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Quote:
So it's now 489km / 303.85 miles which gives 2.953l/100km / 79.64mpgUS. (Yup, a GPS would be nice, but I don't have any now.) Just nitpicking. |

Re: Motorcycling 2011
It's not hard to get 70+ mpg with a fuel injected F650, you don't even need to use hypermiling techniques, driving conservatively and keeping speed limits does the trick. Just look it up (you can find examples at places like f650.com).
OTOH, what's funny is to get this 70+ at winter or exceed 90 mpg in the summer ;) Coasting (and pulse&glide) helps a lot. I occassionally do FAS too. Being relatively short and lightweight helps a bit too (2-up trips usually give like 10 percent worse FE, so the extra weight/aero drag does surely count). |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Another weekend, another country. This time it's Slovakia. (Yes, we're full of small countries here.) Then back to Hungary. The "roads" were awful. And of course you won't believe our averages :D Even though we couldn't reach 90mpg now.
TTT, I don't even update Ciliegia's log since March because I rarely ride her anymore. Actually, she's my girlfriend's bike. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Friend and I rode out toward French Creek today, 130 mi. run and didn't even leave the state.

Re: Motorcycling 2011
You have so many bikes... how do you decide which one to ride on a trip?
|
Re: Motorcycling 2011

I do it the same way as I decide which shirt/underwear to put on.. I'm an addict, motorcycles far less expensive than drugs. |
Re: Motorcycling 2011
Picked up this one for $450.. missing some parts, but runs/shifts well..

What is the new member of your stable? (Though I still like to mostly use one bike for anything and everything. Teresa is so good all-rounder, I don't even really think about getting any other bike. Plus I like to keep one, long, beautiful log that covers everything and shows real everyday use: one-up, two-up, summer, winter, rain, wind, frost, city, highway, freeways and twisties, commute and touring. I'm just this type. Sometimes I ride Ciliegia too, but now my girlfriend has her own license and Cili is hers, so it's been rare in the last one year :)) [Anyway I got a phone with a GPS receiver but I still couldn't get it correctly measure the distance I ride. It's acting up nastily...] |
