Help With Diabetes

we have a friend w/ diabetes that could REALLY use some help. the members here are always helpful, be it tech advice, support, even prayers...but what i'm looking for is certain intuition or experience in an certain area with someone that TRULY cannot help himself.

anyway, at the risk of losing part of part of my eternal reward ;) ...we have helped this young man get a job, bought him goods and clothing, and bought an extra car(for him to borrow)...as well as try to get him help medically.

we have reached our limit on what we can do for him. he needs to see a doctor to get him the correct insulin and to get him on track to deal w/ his diabetes. it seems that now because he's working, it is difficult to get him state help(we did get him limited help before being employed). add to this, his condition is getting worse w/ the added work load now.

my wife mentioned that he couldn't get disability w/out having medicaid and visa versa--some stupid govt loop hole created by abusers no doubt. free mobile clinics OBVIOUSLY won't get it done. cash visits are ungodly as well!

btw, for you cold hearted conservatives like me...his second month on the job(one of my customers), he was named employee of the month. he generally works more than 40 hours per week--this customer cuts the slackers when business is slow. he's a good kid, that deserves some help. thoughts? ideas?

Re: Help With Diabetes

Is there a free medical clinic in your area that serves the poor?

Perhaps they could see him and write prescriptions for his insulin.

Just noticed a book in my library that will help.
Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs.

A diabetes forum might help?

Re: Help With Diabetes

Is he Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic? Is he monitoring his blood xugar before & after meals? How out of control is his diabetes? Is he overweight? Physically active? Able to control his diabetes with diet?

You social conservatives put him into his position by your choice for our pay as you go system. With no other choice, he's got to pay his own way, as expensive as it is. Unfortunately, with a pre-existing condition, and no single payer government option, he's going to be up the creek without a paddle.

Re: Help With Diabetes

First thing he needs to do is get a testing kit, and use it.

Second thing: control his diet and increase his exercise level.

Third thing: get proper medical care, be it dietary counseling, oral meds, and/or insulin. I'm assuming if he's young, he's Type I, & needs insulin, as you said.

Untreated diabetes can lead to blindness, neuropathy, amputations, heart attacks, and a host of other problems.

And Shatto will have to deliver dialysis treatment to his house for daily treatments the rest of his life.

If you liberals want his treatment paid by someone else, why not you?

Let's try to keep this thread about practical help for BTG's friend, and resist talking about politics.
