thanks for the responses guys! i will try to respond to them in condensed form...

he is type 1
not over weight, in fact he is very slim
he does monitor himself and watch his diet VERY closely
he gets plenty of exercise(when he's not recovering from work)
family(none)--apparently it's a touchy subject--not my business
churches, hospital and the rest are not able to give him the long term care he needs
he has an insulin prescription, but it's not the correct one i believe?
perhaps a local tv news consumer advocate COULD help

my thought was to "drop" him off at a particular near by hospital who specializes in diabetes care, but would they too refuse care for no insurance. as bad as this sounds, we thought of allowing his sugar to drop, then take him to(the hospital) putting liability in their court?

Good. If he already has an insulin Rx, then he just needs to fine tune his dosage and timing, which doesn't cost a thing. The information is on the web, as well as with nurse counselors. He can probably get a free consultation with the pharmacist who dispensed his insulin, too. First thing I'd do is try to find him a diabetes support group locally. They're free, or nominal cost.

The big spikes in blood sugar are what he needs to avoid. The capillary damage occurs with blood sugar levels >250. To prevent those, he may need to lower his carb serving sizes at meals, eat smaller meals more frequently, and inject insulin after every meal, instead of once or twice/day. It sounds like he leads a hectic, stressful life. He needs to drop into a scheduled eating/medication cycle where he's in control of the disease, not v.v.

update:

we finally found a doc that will see him for cash. she's 30 miles away, but is trying to find an office closer to him. really doesn't surprise me that it took a woman. generally speaking, i'm convinced they are more caring than their male counterparts. that's not to say they are more qualified, just saying...

doing well. the doc has changed his insulin and found someone who will meet with him regularly for no fee...another female MD...imagine that!

i cant understand why it took so long. it seems there are fewer of us that are willing to give w/out monetary return. i've been doing it(giving freely) for years...often in the past in a position to really need payment of my service.
