1000 miles to a tank

I've been looking through the forum. And Ive seen 500-750 miles to a tank. But has anyone with any car, gone 1000 miles to a tank of gas? Not sure it's completely possible. I see alot of VX's using a 10 gallon tank, so they would have to get 100mpg. But anyways, has it been done by someone here?

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

In theory it is possible with a Prius or first gen Insight. People have gotten 100+ mpg in hypermiling competitions with them. Some drivers in Japan might have done an actual 1000 mile tank with the Prius.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

I know that Prius and the Plug-in Prius does it easily. First Gen Insight could. But I was wondering if anyone on here has done it.

Yes. It can be done. ;)

Rock on PaleMelanesian! That must feel great to get that many miles per tank. keep it up!

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

It's taken a lot of practice to get to this point. Having a good car and a good commute are critical. Also, a scangauge.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

I have a scangauge. But I don't think my car will reach 1000miles. I'm shooting for 400 - 450 miles with no mods(expect for the scangauge),just to see if I can do it without them. Then i'll mod it somewhat and see what I can get.

My silver beast has a 35 gallon tank, and I regularly coax 22 mpg or so out of it at the 65 mph speed limit in hilly terrain here in New England. Someday, I'll take it to Kansas, and put the cruise control on 50.

It could get close to 1000 miles, assuming I can stand the Kanasas boredom.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

Is that prism an automatic? That limits the possibilities. Also, my AC is broken. ;)

It takes me a good 6+ weeks to reach 1000, 10 miles to work and 10 back home.

goofy1 08-02-2011 11:09 AM

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

It's a 4 speed auto. I gotta have AC right now. it's 95 -105F here with high humidity.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

It's not going to be easy. But I think it's within reach to do a 400 - 450 mile tank

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

If you want it, you can do it. 500 is possible with that car. Every little thing counts, and the first mile of a trip counts for double. The engine burns more fuel to warm itself up, so do your best to use that for movement and not just idly turning the engine over.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

yup. My last few years of hypermiling with Gassavers, i've learned that 51-53MPHG is the sweet spot for all corolla engines. Corolla, Vibe, Matrix, Prizm, Nova..etc Doesn't matter if it's a non-VVT-I or the VVT-I.

If I go down to E, I could reach 500 miles regularly. Considering it's a 4 cylinder car with a 16.5 gallon tank, it isn't an achievement.

I always shake my head when see a cars tank range reported in an add or review. Unless you are planning to cross the Saharra with it, when does anybody worry about not finding a gas station?

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

yup. for me, it's not even factor of running out of fuel--it's the stress on the fuel pump.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

Some people are more concerned with how often they have to stop at a gas station and fill up than they are with their budget. It's a lazyness or busy schedule thing, although in places with annoying weather (New England winters or Texas summers) it could be about avoiding the weather.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

It's more of a pushing the envelope thing for me, to see what's possible. And I share the concern about the fuel pump. Notice my latest 1000-mile tank I didn't run it dry. 12 gallons when my biggest fill was 13.8 so I left 1.8 gallons in the bottom. Unless I have a shot at breaking my distance record I won't push it.

And many people will wait in line than pay $0.01 more a gallon at the empty station across the corner.

Those that don't want to get out to pump gas can move to Oregon or NJ.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

In RI there are some full-serv gas stations as well as the more popular self-serv. Most people will not pay more for it, although I suspect when the weather is severe they will.

I wait in line to get the same pump I always get so that I can get accurate FE calculations.

basjoos recently did it as well...https://www.gassavers.org/garage/viewgaslog/2694?
and here's another old member that has done it...https://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=1328

Wow - I couldn't even DREAM of that many miles to a tank! I've gotten over 500 - but that's with an 11 gallon tank!

I know NJ doesn't allow self-serve by law. I think it's Oregon that is the only another full serve only state.

I try to use the same pump, but my time is more valuable than the 10 to 20 cents I'd save at a packed station. I only wait now when cashing in Giant rewards.

Just an update on my car. I just got 39.77MPG. I think the best tank I can do as of right now is 450 - 480 (non-mod)

Perhaps you need to give some tips to the masses here. I have been able to push my Del Sol past 500 miles and that was cool but now that I see your going past 1000 miles in a Honda Civic I need to change it up. What other than aero mods are you doing to get that kind of MPG!? I know that your commute has a lot to do with it and right now I have a wonderful setup thats 34 miles round trip 100% 50mph highway.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

Pulse and glide with eoc. That's the biggest thing. It's a little tougher at 50+ mph, but that's certainly better than 65 or 70. If you do a 45-55 P&G cycle you should be able to kick it a notch higher. Look at getting a gauge - since you ahve a '95 you'll have to wire in a MPGuino instead of a Scangauge. You're doing really well without a gauge.

yaris0128 08-18-2011 12:05 PM

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

Scangauge II's are quite pricey so I was thinking of getting an ECOmeter. Gives you not near as much info but the same idea is there at under half the cost.

theholycow 08-18-2011 12:12 PM

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

The UltraGauge is very similar to the ScanGauge (with some advantages and some disadvantages) at a fraction of the price - about the same price as the ECOmeter.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

The scangauge is actually made in the US if it matters to you.

Not so much.

Re: 1000 miles to a tank

I got 612.3 miles to my last tank. I know I could get more, but it would pretty much have to be all highway driving. Or I would have to start making major modifications with aerodynamics and weight reduction. However, I'm pleased with my FE, and see no reason to really go to such extremes. I like the way my car looks, rides, feels and gets great mpgs. :)
