Basjoos in the news again

Basjoos: The end result is a car with such low drag that the results of coastdown testing is linear out to 90mph (it coasts almost as well at 80mph as it does at 50mph). I have to get it over 90mph before I start to feel the wind load from high-speed driving. OEM max speed was 95mph. I have had it up to 100mph with plenty of power remaining at that speed (estimated top speed of about 140mph). Wind noise is much reduced from stock. Approximate mileage on a flat road at 85F, 95mpg at 30 to 65mph, 85mpg at 70mph, 65mpg at 80mph, 50mpg at 90mph.

In the future, this rad ecomodder plans to create an adjustable radiator door in order to adjust engine cooling on the fly.

I so love seeing this car. He's lucky and lives in a state with no inspections....and he knows way more about aerodynamics than me.

He's one of the originals and his work inspired dozens upon dozens. I've always appreciated basjoos for his willingness to mod in the hopes of MPG and not giving a crap what it took to make some great numbers. That's one resourceful guy on a mission!

He has one advantage over most of us. He lives (or did live) in South Carolina where no inspection is required so he doesn't have to get that beast inspected. I am sure I would catch quite a bit of crap trying to get that thing inspected in North Carolina.

Make your mods easy to put on and take off. Then take them off for the inspection, and put them back on afterwards.

I'd think sweet talking your way past a dubious cop would be much harder than dealing with a mere inspection.

Most cops care more about illegal stuff around here than weird looking cars. if you are driving slow and actually obeying laws, they pretty much leave you alone. too many speeders and road racers around here to really garner too much attention. that being said, I don't look like basjoos either so I can't say for sure.

I remember my dad getting failed for a missing lug nut once....they are very particular around here. I also remember them putting my geo metro on a lift for an inspection because he thought I was running an airbag suspension (illegal here). he said I came in the parking lot a little bouncy.

I actually like what basjoos has done with the hatch and actually made it functional. that does however take away the option of having it removable. I have seen people put partial deflectors on the back of hatchbacks before and have given that a lot of thought on my yaris.

A missing lug nut sounds like a legitimately important issue, not a technicality used to hassle people.

Eh, I think a missing lugnut (especially on a 5-lug hub) is a bit silly to fail a car over.

So would failing over a burnt out high beam, but they can't take "I'll get right on it" as proof of a fix.
