Confession of a hypermiler

I am who or what is known as a “Hyper-miler.
I have some little understood facts here about cars:

My little 66 Ford Mustang (Found On Road Dead / Fix Or Repair Daily) with a small in-line 6-pack/3-speed slush-box got a consistent 15 MPG highway/interstate.
That’s it – that is all I could ever get. I then had a 72 Maverick with a 302 V-8 auto that got 9 MPG city, but I was a led foot back then when Testosterone ruled.
I could blow off a 289 mustang in a heart beat. The plastic Vets – victory not to be.

Wife's 12 Camry with the standard 4-banger/6-speed Auto-overdrive went up from 24 City with her 07 to 28 city and 40 highway in the 2012. The 12 got 40 MPG going both between Huntsville and Birmingham and Huntsville to Nashville. That’s not even a Hybrid. It’s a much bigger car and gets 3 times the MPG of the 66 Ford pony.

Do you remember when you went on a trip and had to stop every 200 to 250 miles to fill up. I do!
I remember when Sam, our cuz, a car dealer, and I drove a 77 Chevy SUV down to south of L.A. from North L.A. and the tank ran down to well below a half – That was the pitts.

Our 13 Camry Mid-size Hybrid displays Range in real-time automatically and starts out just under 700 miles and clock down to zero with 2 gallons left in the tank. And the tank was down sized to 17 gal. vs. 18.5.
That means at cruising speed somewhat under posted speeds, I could drive from Alabama to the Iowa/Nebraska border w/o sucking air from the fuel tank.
More of a load and running 70 MPH will probably not get you quite to Kansas City with rated EPA of 40 city / 40 Highway. It’s averaging 44 city consistently and 44 Highway when driving lite-footed.
The engine ONLY runs when you have your foot on the gas pedal. Dead quite at the red lights and when coasting.

You got to love technology, right?

It sounds like you're doing great with those Camries!

rather get 5mpg than ever own a toyota or other import. I'll keep my 84 cavalier wagon.

I wish I still had my 1980 Pontiac Bonneville Safari wagon. That was an awesome car. I think that's part of the reason I like my Escape Hybrid. It feels like a little station wagon.
