Just got my '14 Ford Fusion Hybrid - still breaking in, but enjoying :D I'm thinking recording in Fuelly via SMS using odometer reading is the easiest for me to keep doing, since I often forget the Trip setting and SMS is quick.

Welcome. Still trying to work out what the Fusion is, it's hybrid, but it uses just as much fuel as a non hybrid?

I say give him a few tanks... Looking at the fuel log, there's only one fillup calculation. Give him some time for him & the car to get acquainted.

That's decent for a first fill.
Looking at other Fusions I noticed the filter is letting hybrids through with the 2.0 ecoboost selected. Might be happening elsewhere. So those high numbers for non-hybrid Fusions might actually be hybrids.

I just dont get how the fusion hybrid is rated at 42 MPG average and it's a hybrid, whereas a similar sized car from Mazda (just an example) with an almost identical 2.0 litre gas engine, is rated at 45 MPG (55 UK) and it's a non hybrid. It makes no sense.

Around town I can get upwards of 60 MPG - my average is definitely a combo of freeway and city (with extreme hills - I live in San Francisco). No matter what, it's not all about extreme MPG for me, getting good MPG on a gas only car still pollutes the air 100% of the time - the hybrid at least cuts down on pollutants to only some of the time. I picked my Ford Fusion Hybrid because I liked the style, comfort, hybrid, and safety features.

Fair enough, style over substance. I think the whole concept of a hybrid is not taken as seriously in the US as it is in Europe, probably because fuel is about a third of the price, and emission regs arent as strict, but it does seem weird for a hybrid to use more fuel than a fully gas car.

NEDC test results can not be compared to EPA. The Mazda3 with 2L is rated 33mpg combined by the EPA. Which is a big step down from the Fusion hybrid 42mpg.

It is even a larger gap when the fact that the Fusion is a size class larger and nearly 800lbs heavier than the Mazda3.

It took Euro 6 for European emission regulations to catch up to American ones. Diesel ones are still more lax, but that is because the US makes diesels comply to gasoline ones and not have separate ones. 2017 the US will start moving to LEVIII.

I recently bought a new hybrid vehicle as well. I looked at the Fusion Hybrid but, went with the Honda Accord Hybrid. Tough decision but, it came down to slight electrical/mechanical differences and dealer preference for me.

Good luck with the car. I have owned several Ford vehicles and they make good products. I'm sure the FE will improve as you get used to the vehicle.
